Subject and Verb 1st Agreement
A subject can’t come without a verb and a verb
can’t come without a subject. Both have to come
together in the same sentence.
Example:
He is playing chess.
Ram studied.
Rohan has left the college.

Singular subject must have singular verb &
Plural subject must have plural verb.
For example :
• He writes. They write.
• She plays. We play.

Rule No 2
Two subjects joined by ‘and’ will always take a
plural verb.
For example :
• The doctor and nurse work together.
Rule No 3
But two nouns joined by 'and', if first noun is
preceded by an article and second is not this means
both nouns represent the same person, so a singular
verb is used.
For example :
• The Chairman and Director is arriving.
• A friend and colleague is getting married.
Rule No 4
If two subjects are joined together by ‘as well as’,
‘with’, ‘along with’, ‘together with’, ‘besides’, ‘in
addition to’, ‘and not’, ‘rather than’, the verb will act
according to the main subject.
For example :
• Students as well as the teacher are playing.
• He as well as his brothers is sitting there.
• I as well as he am going out of station for a week.
Rule No 5
Two singular subjects joined by ‘or’ or ‘nor’ will take
a singular verb.
For example :
• A doctor or a nurse is working in the hospital.
Rule No 6
If sentence begins with 'each, everyone, everybody,
someone, somebody, no one, nobody, anyone,
anybody, none and one', a singular verb is used.
For example :
• Each of the students is present.
• One of the participants is missing.
Rule No 7
Indefinite pronouns such as someone, somebody, no
body, one, no one, everyone, everybody, either,
neither, etc. always take a singular verb.
For example :
• Each of my friends calls me once a month.
• Each boy and each girl has come.
• One must tolerate one‘s friend as well as enemy.
Rule No 8
Indefinite plural pronouns (all, some, part, majority,
percentage, fraction, several, few, both and many)
always take plural verbs.
For example :
• Both of the books require careful reading.
• Several of the fielders regularly run four or five
kilometer a day.

• The Amendment seeks to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and
Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship if they entered India on
or before December 31, 2014.
• Certain areas in the North-East are exempted from above provision. Tribal areas of Assam,
Meghalaya, Mizoram, or Tripura included in the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution, or areas under the
“Inner Line” permit, i.e., Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
• On acquiring citizenship all legal proceedings against them in respect of their illegal migration or
citizenship will be closed.
• The period of acquiring citizenship by naturalisation has been reduced from 11 years to 5 years for
above category of migrants.
• The Act provides that the central government may cancel the registration of OCIs on certain grounds.
These include:
(i) if the OCI has registered through fraud, or
(ii) if, within five years of registration, the OCI has been sentenced to imprisonment for two years
or more, or
(iii) if it becomes necessary in the interest of sovereignty and security of India.
