Balancing Man Construction Path

1) The document outlines the 7 step process for constructing a balancing man. 2) The first steps include designing the balancing man and board, then cutting out the pieces using a plasma cutter. 3) Next, the edges were ground smooth and the board was sanded. Holes were drilled and the stick man and connecting rod were cut and bent to shape. 4) Finally, the pieces were welded together and excess weld was ground off to complete the balancing man construction.

Balancing Man Construction

Path
By Gurtaj Dhillon
Step 1
My initial first step was to design my
balancing man and board, and include
measurements to my design. For my
balancing man, I decided to make it 3
pieces and add a washer for the head.
For the board my measurements were 4
¼” by 1” and ⅛|”
Step 2
After designing my piece on paper, i went to the plasma cutter to cut it out but
before that i had to find an ideal piece. It had to be 4 ¼” by 1” and ⅛” thick, Me
being the first one to volunteer to use the plasma cutter, Mr Spiers gave me the
piece and explained to us how to use the plasma cutter. Before cutting we had
have the plasma cutter glasses and a proper jacket as well as the ideal gloves and
draw our measurements on the metal piece. When cutting i started a little bit of my
piece and began going at a steady pace with the cutter making sure it wasn’t to
fast or too slow. I also made sure i didn't let the cutter stay in one place for too
long as it would have created a molten metal pool which would have wrecked the
plasma cutter mouth.
Step 3
After cutting the metal with the plasma cutter, we had to grind the edges to make
them straight and flat. I already had 2 sides which were perfectly straight because
they were the edge of the metal i cut and only had to cut the other 2 sides. When
grinding I made sure to have the proper grinding disc and wear the proper
protection (proper jacket, face shield and hearing protection). I had to clamp the
piece in the vice and began doing light strokes back and forth to take the uneven
chunks out.
Step 4
After grinding, I let my piece cool down
and swapped my grinding disc with the
sanding one. I clamped my piece flat and
begin sanding and taking the paint of my
board. I made not to use the end part of
the sanding disc because it would have
ruined the disc. I made sure to do it
evenly, and make the pattern look the
same.
Step 5
After getting done with the board I began
drilling it and made the legs 1” apart using
the drill press and a 1/16” drill bit to drill 2
holes and 1 in the middle for the
connecting rod.
Step 6
After drilling, I asked Mr.Speirs for the 24”, 5/16” steel rod and cut it to 1 6” piece
to make the stick man. I marked the length on the rod with a sharpie and began
cutting it with the cutting side of the pliers. After that I used 2 pliers to bend the cut
pieces to my liking to form the shape of a stick man snowboarding making sure my
legs fit in the holes i drilled earlier for the feet. I also used the rest of the rod and
cut 14” off the remaining piece and cut another 1” for the bottom part. After that I
used the slip roll machine which was already set up for the right measurements
and rolled my 14” rod in and it was bent after it exited.
Step 7
After I collected all my pieces which were all ready to
go, I proceeded on to weld it. I got some practices and
techniques learnt on the practise pieces that Mr. Spiers
provided and began to weld my pieces. I started off by
setting the voltage to 5.5 and the wire speed at 50,
After that I got all my protective gear and set my mask
to 11 and made sure it was working. I set my piece
beside a magnet and attached the negative jumper to
the piece of metal I was welding and held my weld gun
up straight and proceeded to weld. I made sure to go
slowly and not touch my weld gun to the piece of metal.
After doing all my Welds I began grinding the excess off
to make it look more neat and “human like".
