1. Reflection about Media History
The Internet is the first medium in history that has native support for groups and
conversation at the same time. Whereas the phone gave us the one-to-one pattern and
television, radio, magazine, books gave us the one-to-many pattern, the Internet gives us the
many-to-many pattern. So, as years goes by the internet also becomes the motive carriage for
all other media. Meaning that phone calls migrate to the Internet, magazines migrate to the
Internet, movies migrate to the Internet. Social media, this period is the largest increase in
expressive capability in human history. The social media can make history because of how it
helped the people a lot of its effect. It made everything easier to communicate with each other
or with other people. Everyone is connected via media worldwide. Even though it makes our
life easier, it has negative and positive impacts to our lives too. So, we should use the best of
it. We should try using social media and other internet websites in a good way. Don’t use
social media and this newly discovered technologies in a bad way because this was all made
for us for easier access in life.
2. Reflection about Globalization and Culture
We may have different cultures and religions, but because of globalization we tend to
unite as one despite of our differences. Through globalization we can get benefits from other
countries and so do they. It is the circulation and sharing of ideas and of meanings and values
across countries; hence across cultures, with the effect of increasing social contacts leads to
more positive human interconnectedness. Today globalization is constant and even
irreversible. Globalization influences to changing cultural pattern too. Globalization describes
the acceleration of the integration of nations into global system. It contributes to the
expansion of cultural ties between the peoples and human migration. Globalization
contributes to the exchange of cultural values. But as what I have observe, the local traditions
are being devalued by this modernization. From the insurmountable influence of internet and
other social media, local and traditional clothing, and many more. Overall, globalization has
affected the culture and ethnic diversity of a country negatively. Furthermore, the drawbacks
outweigh the advantages.
3. Reaction Paper about Connected but Alone
We were shown a video entitled “Connected but Alone”. This talks about on how
technology is having a major impact on our social relationship at this age. She explained
everything in relate with her daughter on how she excessively use the gadgets rather than her.
I agreed with her idea that many individuals seeking recognition, friendship,
companionship, and communication are most likely going to their mobile phones to
communicate with others because this is somewhat true and happening nowadays. This
becomes a big issue with our society because individuals rely on their phones, a technological
device instead of relying on others or human beings. I have observed that most of the people
find comfort in the social media than with the human beings. Family members, friends,
colleagues, and members of the community feel neglected and do not receive the attention or
interaction they need. But still we should focus our attention on the relationship with people
around us and not on our illusionary friends in social media and that we should be connected
with real life people in the real world. Although technology has made communication easier,
it is sometimes a deterrent to the actual conversation and interpersonal discussions and
relationships.
I agreed also to her idea that the internet changes us not just in the social media world
but also the physical and emotional stability of a person. It is because the internet has many
effect to us it can be either good or bad. Children who grew up exposed to gadgets are likely
to have a spoiled personality depending on what they watch on the internet, the excessive use
of gadgets can do no good to all of us.
Lastly, I agreed to her idea that technology appeals to us when we are most
vulnerable. We expect more from technology and less from each other because we’re afraid
of intimacy.
