POSITIVE FILIPINO VALUES

Bayanihan- Filipino community spirit

of cooperation in which a group of
individuals extends a helping hand
without expecting any remuneration. As
you can see on the image Filipino males
carrying a “kubo” to transfer to another
place. They did this willingly without
compensation.

Damayan- is not only giving sympathy

for people who have lost a loved one but
damayan can also be used when a
particular place in our country
experiencing calamity where they need
goods to survive similar to the image
provided.

Familism or Close Familiy Ties-

Filipino trait of prioritizing the family above
other things. We Filipino we value,
prioritize, and caring to our family, we can
risk all for the sake of our family, we can
give up what we have in order our family
to stay in tack.
Fun-loving trait- we Filipinos Always have something to be happy about, a reason
to celebrate. Even during calamities and hardships we still can smile and laugh and that
makes us unique from others.

Hospitality- Filipino trait of being

receptive and generous to guests. We
Filipinos love accepting guest, we provide
what we have and what we can to make
them comfortable in our place.

Compassion- Filipino trait of being kind

to others even if the person is a stranger.
As you can see on the image where a
stranger giving mask to a boy, this was
pandemic times.

Regionalism- Filipino trait of giving his

province mates preferential treatment as
well as priority over natives of other
provinces. In this image you can see that
the jeepney is overloaded because all of
the people riding the jeepney is living in
the same place or province. Even though
crowded the important thing is they well
get home for their family.

Friendliness- Filipino quality of being

sincere, loyal, kind, and sociable. It’s only
natural to us being friendly because we are
Filipino, we don’t care if the member of the group is from other place, ethnicity, religion
and etc. We accept everyone as equal.

Flexibility or kakayahang
makibagay- ability of Filipinos to adapt
or adjust to the norms of other groups just
to maintain smooth and harmonious
relationships. We have this ability to adjust
in any situation, place or event that we are
into. That’s why we can gather people and
friends because we can easily adjust for
them in order to have harmonious
relationship.

Religiosity- Filipinos possess strong

adherence to religious doctrines both in
words and in deed. We Filipinos we have
strong faith in God we surrender our life,
worries, problems and etc.

Respect for elders- Filipino trait of

being courteous both in words and in
actions to the elderly. We Filipinos give all
the respect to our elderly because of them
there’s no new generation of young men
and women. If you’re a Filipino you’ll feel
how important to respect the one who is
ahead of you.

Remedyo attitude- Filipino trait of

being creative and resourceful. As you can
see on the image provided that the children find a way how to get some water in a easy
and fun way, that’s why they did this bamboo branch and wheels that made by wood,
look how creative and resourceful Filipinos are.

Persistence- we Filipinos are known

for our tenacity and strong determination
in every undertaking. No matter how
risky, dangerous, and impossible the way
that we are taking towards to our goal in
life, that’s nothing because like I said
from past values we are Filipino there’s
no such thing that we can’t do.

Utang na loob- is the feeling of

obligation to repay someone who has
extended assistance to another. We
Filipinos if we receive help from others
without asking them and they willingly
help you that’s utang na loob, even
though you’re not obligated to repay
them but your conscience tells you to
repay them, do something for them.

NEGATIVE FILIPINO VALUES

Bahala na attitude- we Filipinos has a trait characterized by retreating or
withdrawing from certain undertakings and leaving everything to God. The famous line
that we usually say is “bahala na si batman”. As you can see on the image a girl jumps
unto the other side without assurance that she will get to the other side.

Blue-seal mentality- Filipino

mindset of regarding foreign products
as superior in quality and preferring
them over locally manufactured goods.
We appreciate more the products from
other country than our local products
we disregard our own products and
give more value to foreign products.

Euphemism- we have this ability to

insult others but in a nice way, we can
also substitute phrases to be more
offensive unto others.

Filipino Time- it means “always late”, a

Filipino attitude of impreciseness towards
time. We are all aware of this value and we
didn’t anything to change this type of trait.

Gaya-gaya attitude- attitude of imitating

or copying other culture specifically in mode of
dressing, language, fashion or even haircut.
This is really Pinoy, we follow the trends there
in, like now the new trend in terms of dressing is aesthetic, and in terms of haircut we
imitate the style any race that we feel fit to us.

Jackpot Mentality- a “get rich quick”

mentality. Who of us don’t like to get rich in
an instant, I think all of us want that,
specially us Filipino who want an easy
money, without sweat. We like that, we’re
just sitting and suddenly a briefcase of
money will fall from the sky, that’s who we
are.

Kapalaran Values- Filipino trait of

accepting his fate by believing that
everything is written in his palm. Like we
surrender our destiny to God, whatever
happens, you’re willing to accept it. Example
a girl who wanted to be a teacher but no
matter how hard he try to apply but still
nothing happen, until such time came she
became a doctor.

Manana habit- delaying or setting aside a

certain task assigned on the next day
although it can be done today. Very common
to Filipino, whenever we are tasked to do
something, we usually do it later until we
forget it.

Ningas-Cogon- being enthusiast only

during the start of new undertaking but ends
dismally in accomplishing nothing. In tagalog we
say “sa umpisa lang magaling”.
Oversensitive- Filipinos have the tendency
to be irritated easily or hurt upon hearing some
criticisms or comment. We Filipinos are very
sensitive if we hear you criticize our race of one
of our fellow Filipinos, we get angry easily and
fight for our fellowmen.

Lack of Sportsmanship- not accepting

defeat in competitions but rather putting the
blame either to their opponents or to the
sport officials. There’s a lot of factors why
some of us don’ accept defeat example bias
referee.

Tsamba lang attitude- simplicity by

declaring that his/her accomplishments are
results of luck and not from perseverance and
ability. Sometimes we say “tsamba lang yon” in
order to be humble because it’s not good to
see being arrogant on your accomplishments.
