CUSTOM BOX

SAFETY ITEMS
Day 1: Wood Glued and ready to cut.

At the point I had taken a piece of Walnut and a lighter strip of wood
in order to make a uniquely designed box. I cut the Walnut piece at
an inch from the top and glued the lighter strip in the middle of the
two pieces of walnut it to give it this beautiful color and design.
Day 2 and 3: Planning the Wood

• To ensure that all wood is completely flat and at the same elevl
we need to begin planning the wood. What this does is take off a
bit of material each pass until it is flush with the rest of the pieces.
Day: 4 and 5 Cutting the Wood
• After I had successfully planned the wood to be flat, now it is time for it to be cut in
to it’s required size ( determined in your planning ). By using the Miter Saw I will be
able to make cuts going against the grain. I Started by placing my stop block to
the size of the cut. Then firmly, yet softly I pushed my wood up against the stop
block to make sure it doesn’t move. Then firmly I griped the wood and pushed it
up against the metal part of the Miter Saw and kept my hand out of the way of the
cut. This make sures you have a good grip on your wood and makes sure your
wood is straight and lined up when you cut. When cutting make sure to wait for the
blade to come to a complete stop at the bottom before bringing it back up.

required.
Day 6,7 and 8: Sanding the Pieces of Wood

• After I had got my cut pieces, I proceeded to sand the wood down properly. I
began sanding with grit 60, 100 and then 320 after that I raised the grain and then
re-sanded the piece with 320 to ensure properly sand down the grain. It felt
smooth afterwards almost like glass.
Day 9: Cutting the groove

• After I finished sanding everything, I proceeded to cut the groove for the base of
the box on the table saw.

Day 10 and 11: Making the Base

• After I had the grooves I could now cut my base to the right dimensions so where
it fits in properly.
Day 12,13,14 and 15: Putting in Base and
Gluing wood
• After wards I taped the places that glue would ooze out of, so it would make for a
easier clean up. I made sure to clamp all sides, firmly although I forgot to use a
square to make sure my corners were 90 degrees, which has cause a slight
inconvince in the structure of my box.
Day 16 and 17: Belt sanding the sides fully
flush
• After I glued everything, I needed to make the sides flush. Although when I was
using the belt sander, I had accidentally rolled over my box which has made one of
the corners a bit slanted. So, make sure that you are holding the box flat against
the sander.

Day 18: Filling cracks

• Afterwards I had some cracks in my areas where the pieces met. I filled it with glue
and then sanded it down with 60 grit sandpaper. After I had repeated my entire
sanding process to ensure it was all smooth

This is an example of some

of the cracks I had to fill in.
Day 19 and 20:

• Before I had finished my box, I decided to laser engrave my box ( you can find it
on my laser engraving project on my website )
Day 21 and 22: Finishing The Box

• Once I reached this step I made sure to perfectly finish my box with Tung oil.
Ensuring the wood’s color stays perfect while being protected.
FINISHED PRODUCT

• This is what the box turned up like in the end. In the end I am very pleased with
what I have created.
