The students will describe Mary through the initials A,B,C... Each will receive one- two letters and they will be given 1 minute to
think of the word/phrase that describe her. Each will read what they have written and post it on board.
C. Exposition
Looking back on Genesis, we have learned that Adam and Eve disobeyed God and they fell into sin. But it didn’t end in that. God
did not abandon man after they fell into sin, but promised a Savior who will redeem all people. He is none other than Jesus Christ
that through Mary, He became one of us. Man, will form man, who has a body and soul like us.
Now, in order to deepen our understanding on how God called Mary as Jesus’ mother, let us go into the Sacred Scripture.
A. Sacred Scripture
(This will be done in dialogue style. The boys will read the lines of angel Gabriel and the girls will be the lines of Mary, the
rest will be read by the teacher)
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke (Lk 1:26-38)
Announcement of the Birth of Jesus.26 in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee
called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And
coming to her, he said, “Hail favoured one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered
what sort of greeting this might be. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. 31
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son
of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob
forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a
man?” 35 And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow
you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived
a son in her old age, and called barren; 37 for nothing will be impossible for God.” 38 Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of
the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
The Gospel of the Lord, praise to you O Lord Jesus Christ.
In the Annunciation account, God called Mary to become the Mother of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ in her most pure
womb through the power of the Holy Spirit that came upon her. The Angel announced to her that she will bear a Son and will be
called the Mother of God, Jesus Christ. And as her response to God’s call, she said “yes” to the angel to become His Mother for
there is nothing impossible to God.
Now, Let us know the teaching of the Church about the Motherhood of Mary.
B. Church Teaching
CCC 494: At the announcement that she would give birth to "the Son of the Most High" without knowing man, by the
power of the Holy Spirit, Mary responded with the obedience of faith, certain that "with God nothing will be impossible":
"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word. "Thus, giving her consent to God's
word, Mary becomes the mother of Jesus. Espousing the divine will for salvation wholeheartedly, without a single sin to
restrain her, she gave herself entirely to the person and to the work of her Son; she did so in order to serve the mystery of
redemption with him and dependent on him, by God's grace.
It is through sincere faith that an ordinary woman will be able to say yes to God in the annunciation event without knowing fully
what the announcement of the angel means. Looking impossible that she will bear a son, she still believe and was able recognize
that she is a handmaid of the Lord. Right after she said yes, the conception started and becomes the mother of Jesus. Here, we
learn that Mary has a great role in God’s work of salvation. As St. Irenaeus says, "Being obedient she became the cause of
salvation for herself and for the whole human race." "The knot of Eve's disobedience was untied by Mary's obedience: what the
virgin Eve bound through her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith." Comparing her with Eve, they call Mary "the Mother of the
living" and frequently claim: "Death through Eve, life through Mary."
Redemptoris MaterOnThe Blessed Virgin Mary In The Life Of The Pilgrim Church (Paragraph 4)
In the life of the Pilgrim Church Mary is the Mother of God (Theotókos), since by the power of the Holy Spirit she
conceived in her virginal womb and brought into the world Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is of one being with the
Father. "The Son of God...born of the Virgin Mary...has truly been made one of us," has been made man.
- The obedience of faith of Mary to God was made her the Mother of God or Theotokos. Theo means ‘God’ and tokos means
‘bearer’, Mary is the bearer of God, the Theotokos.
- At the Council of Ephesus in 431 Mary's divine motherhood was proclaimed.
Various names are used to describe Mary's role as Mother of Jesus. She is called "Mother of God" which translates the more
accurately stated greek term "Theotokos" or "Birthgiver of God."
But in the late fourth century, Apollinarius, a bishop of Laodicea questioned the Humanity of Jesus. Because in our Christian
doctrine Jesus has two natures: the divine nature and the human nature, He is 100% God and 100% Human.
Apollinarianism- believes that Jesus only had one nature. In this case, that nature is divine. This heresy neglects the
100% humanity of Jesus Christ.
The Council of Ephesus (431) - The truth of the divine motherhood of Mary was solemnly confirmed as a truth of the Church's
faith. Mary is the Mother of God, since by the power of the Holy Spirit she conceived in her virginal womb and brought into the
world Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is of one being with the Father.
This decision was further explained by the Council of Chalcedon (451) which says with regard to Mary's divine motherhood.
The Church teaches that Mary is the Mother of God. As we learned about the great role of Mary in the salvation history, we also
learn better that she was able to completely surrender herself to God and was selfless.
As we place ourselves in Him, we find ourselves again, made new and completed. Mary teaches us how to make an ordinary
extraordinary. Through Mary, God invites us to live "redemptively" for others, to become dwelling places through which Incarnate
Love comes alive for all those around us. This also challenges us how can we make ourselves as daughters and sons of hers for
we know that the true devotion is imitation. If Mary will come at this moment of time, what do you think she will ask of you?
IV. Means: LIVE REDEMPTIVELY! Presentation on how we can see Mary in today’s society in the different
circumstances.
Instruction: The students will be divided into three groups. Let them choose a particular circumstance where they can make a
skit, jingle/poem and slogan on how to be Mary in their chosen situations.
V. Integration

V. Summary (Six hats) Music will be played while hats will be passed among the students ( two hats per color) . Once the music
stopped, teacher will say the color and one of the holders of the hats will make a question and the other will answer. (Question will
be based on the color of the hat)
