PRACTICING PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT AT HOME,
IN SCHOOL, AND IN THE COMMUNITY

What I Need to Know

At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to practice proper waste
management at home, in school, and in the community (H6CMHIIh-8)

What’s New

Introduction:

Proper waste management should be practiced at home, in school, in the community

and in all other places.

Proper waste management includes the following:

a. proper storage and collection
b. proper garbage disposal
c. recycling

A. Proper Garbage Disposal

Proper disposal of waste should be done to avoid diseases. Unhygienic waste

disposal can cause unsightly conditions and annoying odors that are nuisance to
the community.

Solid waste can be disposed through different methods like dumping,

composting and feeding to animals.

• Dumping of waste anywhere will result to serious nuisance and hazards

that is why we will only dump our waste to proper dumping sites provided
in the community.

1
The problem with the method is lack of adequate soil cover to enable
insects from feeding on the wastes and could be the breeding place for
flies, mosquitoes, rats, and other insects.

• Composting is depositing the garbage, leaves or rubbish and animal

manure into a pit and covered with soil to about two to three feet. The
composted material will serve as a good fertilizer and soil conditioner.

• Feeding to animals is making left-over food and certain kind of garbage

materials that can still be made use of by feeding them to pigs, chicken,
and other poultry and live tocks.

B. Recycling
A process of making used materials that are to
be disposed into useful ones, such as: candy
wrappers into flowers, out of discarded porcelain
wares into lampshades.

Reduce waste by recycling or reusing them.

When you recycle, you break down waste
products back to their basic material for reuse
for the same purpose or for other purposes.
