Senior Data Engineer, GWAM

Manulife’s Global Wealth & Asset Management (Global WAM) segment has embarked on an
exciting journey that is transforming the organization by harnessing the power of data and
related analytics. This transformation is a key strategic enabler and we are looking for
individuals who are passionate about joining the team that will lead this journey.
We have an exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about harnessing the
power of data and brings to the table robust technical expertise coupled with strong
communications skills.

The Chief Data Office in close partnership with key business stakeholders, Global WAM
Operations and Information Services will support the transformation of the organization to
ensure data is leveraged as a strategic asset supporting our business goals. The group’s
objectives include:
 A single, central source for data which is easy to access and describes how the data was
obtained
 Data quality continually monitored and accuracy improved
 Common standards and policies for data governance
 Flexible reporting tools to access data and adapt to changing business or regulatory
requirements

This role of Senior Data Engineer, GWAM Chief Data Office will be a key member of a team of
data professionals responsible for establishing and driving the successful implementation of BI
and reporting solutions in Manulife’s Global WAM segment. They will bring together their
technical expertise, business knowledge and communications skills to enable deployment and
usage of these solutions for GWAM.

A Data Engineer should provide subject matter expertise around all aspects of data, including
business & technical knowledge, be able to develop well-designed, scalable & sustainable
solutions that meet business needs, and support/work with other team members &
stakeholders to deliver on objectives as well as elevate data broadly in the business

Responsibilities:
 Provide subject matter expertise on data, systems and data environments
 Lead development and deployment of database-side/technical aspects of operational
insights solutions, including data sourcing, ETL and data modelling
 Build, enhance and maintain SQL databases leveraging good database practices
 Able to apply your skills as a technical solutions expert and your understanding of
industry best practices to deliver timely results
 Apply change management principles and utilize appropriate messaging/positioning to
ensure solutions are well governed and successfully adopted by all levels of stakeholders
 Establish standards and documentation related to data ingestion/ETL and modelling
 Support development related to the technical capability established in our data quality
solution, including troubleshooting issues and expanding functionality or reporting

Leadership:
 5-10 years of relevant work experience
 Promote organizational excellence through development of a culture of accountability,

 Build strong employee involvement, engagement and collaboration within and across
teams
 Utilize innovative approaches to solve business data problems
 Strong service orientation and personal accountability
 Qualifications:
 Undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Engineering, Mathematics,
Physics)
 High business and technical acumen; ability to quickly learn about the business or
technologies and apply knowledge to achieve team outcomes with positive attitude and
strong work ethic
 Strong proficiency in data analysis, with broad understanding of data foundationally and
technically
 Strong experience in data ETL, data modeling, database and query language (e.g., SQL,
PL/SQL), programming languages (e.g., C#, VB, Python); MS Azure experience is a nice to
have
 Hands-on experience creating solutions leveraging a variety of technologies
 Experience bridging the business and technology worlds with the ability to effectively
collaborate across teams to achieve desired outcomes
 Ability to constructively challenge and influence stakeholders
 Tenacity to push past challenges while maintaining focus on the objective is essential
 Strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills
