Capacitance

Capacitance refers to the ability of a system to store electrical charge. It depends on the geometry, dielectric medium, and distance between conducting plates. The capacitance of parallel plates is given by C=ε0A/d, where ε0 is the permittivity of free space, A is the overlapping plate area, and d is the plate separation. Capacitors can be combined in parallel and in series. For capacitors in parallel, the total capacitance is the sum of the individual capacitances. For capacitors in series, the reciprocal of the total capacitance is the sum of the reciprocals of the individual capacitances. Energy is stored in a capacitor as U=1/2CV
