HPS 2109: FOUNDATIONS OF HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Prerequisite: None

Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to enable students learn and apply in real environment the
concepts of Human Resource Management.

Course description

The role of Human Resources Management in the organization; The development of the
Human Resources Management concept; Key activities of Human Resources
Management; Formulating and implementing human resources strategies; The
intellectual/social capital concept and it’s practical implications; Competencies of the
human resources practitioner; Human Resources Management professional ethics;
Evaluating the contribution of human resources function; Characteristics of people at
work; Attitudes to work; Motivation and performance; Motivation strategies; Employees
commitment to the organizational goals; The components of the organizational culture;
Assessing organizational climate; Supporting and changing cultures; The nature of work;
Changing patterns of work; The psychological contract; Developing and maintaining a
positive psychological contract. Practice: i) Design instrument for employee opinion poll;
ii) Prepare a sample job description. Case study in organization structure review.

Delivery methods

The instructional methods of this course are comprised of a combination of le


ctures, class presentations and case studies.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

a) Explain Human Resource Management terms and concepts.

b) Describe Human Resource Functions in organizations

c) Apply their knowledge of Human Resource Functions to improve


organizational effectiveness.

Week 13 &14: Emerging issues in Human Resource Management
