9. Course Description :
This course discusses protocols and architectures for wireless sensor network design. It covers
wireless sensor node and network architectures, and communication protocols in data-link,
network, and transport layers. The course will discusses focused topics for wireless sensor networks
such as time synchronization, localization, and topology management.
10. Aim of the Course :
The course aims to study the fundamentals of sensor networks and the several issues in the OSI
layer.
11. Learning Objectives :
At the end of the course students will be able to:
Discuss the basic sensor network concepts;
Explain physical layer issues, medium Access control Protocols;
Comprehend network layer characteristics and protocols;
Discuss transport layer issues and protocols;
Explain the network management and Middleware services.
12. Topics of Study :
Unit I
Overview of wireless sensor networks: The vision of ambient intelligence, application example,
types of applications, challenges for wireless sensor networks, enabling technologies for wireless
sensor networks.
Unit II
Architectures: Single node architecture, hardware components, operating systems and execution
environments, network architecture, sensor network scenarios.
Unit III
Physical Layer: Introduction, wireless channel and communication fundamentals, physical layer
and transceiver design considerations in WSNs. MAC protocols, contention based protocols,
schedule based protocols.

Unit IV
Link layer protocols: Fundamentals: Tasks and requirements, error control, causes and
characteristics of transmission errors, ARQ techniques, FEC techniques, framing, adaptive
schemes, intermediate checksum schemes, combining packet size optimization and FEC, link
management, link quality characteristics, link quality estimation.
Unit V
Advanced application support: Advanced, network processing, going beyond mere aggregation of
data, distributed signal processing, distributed source coding. Security, fundamentals security
considerations in wireless sensor networks, denial of service attacks.
13. Mode of Assessment :
Attendance is Compulsory. A student should secure 85% of attendance in the course to be eligible
for appearing End Semester Examination. Minimum 2 assignments carrying 10 marks each shall be
submitted for evaluation (Refer Assignment Policy). 2 Continuous Assessment Test covering 2.5
units are conducted at 6th week and 12th week respectively for 10 marks each. There shall be a End
Semester Examination at the end of 15th week covering all 5 units for a 3 hour duration and
evaluated for 60 marks. (Refer Examination Guidelines).
