Tutorial Sheet-2 (Unit-1)
Q1. Class Work: For the circuit in Fig., find the branch currents I 1, I2, and I3
using mesh analysis.
Mesh Analysis: Polarity of the sources is always given in the questions and we need to find polarity of
consumer elements e g resistances in this circuit
Step 1: Let’s consider that current entering into 15V source at -ve and leaving from positive of the source is
taken as if it results into a positive voltage => +15V
Polarity in 5 ohm is + to – in the direction of current (since 15V polarity is – to + in direction of
current)
Similarly, Polarity in 10ohm is + to – in the direction of current in Loop 1
Similarly, Polarity in 6ohm and 4ohm is + to – in the direction of current I2 in Loop 2
Similarly, Polarity in 10ohm is + to – in the direction of current I2 in Loop 2
Hence, we have 10ohm resistance that has distinct polarities in each loop.
Step 2: Apply KVL in LOOP 1: => +15V-5 I1- 10 (I1-I2)-10V=0
15 I1-10 I2= 5V
3 I1-2 I2= 1-----------------(1)
Step 3: Apply KVL in LOOP-2: => 10V- 10 (I2-I1) - 6 I2-4 I2
10 I1-20 I2= -10
I1-2 I2= -1-----------------(2)
Step 4: (1)-3x (2) => 4 I2= 4
I2= 1A
Put value of I2 in equation 1
3 I1-2 x 1= 1
3 I1 = 2+1=3
I1 = 1A
I3 = I1-I2=1-1=0A
Q2. (Home work)
(students
will write the detailed answer in the copy)
Ans. Step 1: Given that I1, I2 and I3 are flowing clockwise in the respective loops of the circuit, find
polarity of circuit as mentioned in steps of Q1 and proceed to write equations
Q3. Class Work :Find current through 4 resistance.
Ans2:
Total resistance = (((4||6) series with 1.6)|| 6)series with 1.6)= 4 ohm=> total current I = 40v/4=10A; => I 2
flows through 1.6 in series with 4||6= 4ohm, and I1= flows through 6ohm
Using current divider => I2= 6X10/10= 6A, I1= 4A
Now I3= 6X6/10 =3.6A, I4= 4X6/10=2.4A
Q4: Class Work:Using Node voltage method, find the current in the resistances for the
network shown in Fig.?
Step1: Identify the junction (having at least three elements meeting) nodes and let’s
consider node 2 as GND and Node 1 as V1
Step 2: Mark I1, I2, I3 as branch currents and Apply KCL at Node 1=> I1= I2+I3
(4+2-V1)/5= (V1-4)/2+ (V1-0)/2 => 2 (4-V1) = 3(V1-4) + 3(V1-0)
12-2V1= 5V1- 4X5+ 5V1= 10V1-20
=> 12-2V1= 10V1-20
=> 32= 12V1 => V1=8/3= 2.667V
Step 3: I1= (4-V1)/3 = (4-2.667)/3=1.333/3=0.4444A
I2 = (V1-4)/2 = (2.667-4)/2= -1.333/2= -0.667A
I3=(V1-0)/2 =2.667/2= 1.3334A
