In-Flight Exercises
Exercise 1 – Resume Climb to Cruise Altitude
Introduction You have just received clearance to your cruise altitude FL310.
Initiate climb to your new clearance altitude:
1. Turn to your new clearance altitude FL310.
2. Push to engage managed climb.
3. Observe your FMA change.
TIPS:
When you turn to enter a new altitude, the new altitude is displayed in the ALT
window and on your altitude scale.
However, the aircraft will only take into consideration this new altitude if you push
(managed) or pull (selected) identified by the FMA change.

Exercise 2 – Vertical Guidance Practice
Introduction You will now practice vertical guidance and the impacts on altitude
constraints.
STEP 1: Constraints in Managed Mode
Since you are in managed mode and your ND indicates the constraint can be respected,
your aircraft will comply and automatically resume climb without any action.
1. Observe your FMA while performing STEP 2.

2. Push to resume managed climb.
NOTE: There are also interactions if you select lateral mode. It will be seen later on the APT
tool.
3. After PIBAT, check aircraft is climbing again.
4. Observe next constraint at CACHI is not matched (amber color).
5. Now, let’s assume ATC clears you to disregard CACHI constraint.

Exercise 3 – Vertical Speed Practice
Introduction We will now discover the vertical speed flight guidance modes.
STEP 1: Selecting vertical speed.
1. Pull VS/FPA selection knob and observe your FMA.
The vertical speed value will be the present one.
2. Turn to reduce the vertical speed and observe your FMA and PFD.

STEP 2: Changing to flight path angle reference.
1. Press on the HDG/TRK – V/S FPA pushbutton and observe you have changed
your flying reference from the flight director to the flight path vector (bird).
2. Set the flight path angle to +2.0° using the VS/FPA knob and observe your
FMA.
3. Push the V/S FPA knob and notice that this levels off the aircraft rather than
reverting to managed climb.
4. Push the ALT knob to revert to managed mode.
5. Set back to the HDG/VS mode (remove the BIRD).

Exercise 4 – OFFSET
Introduction We will now discover how to perform lateral revisions. Starting with offset,
which is useful for example when avoiding CBs.
STEP 1: Wait until cruise altitude capture.
1. Observe the FMA changes when cruise altitude is reached.
STEP 2: Insert an offset.
1. Select the lateral revision page from a close waypoint.
2. Select the OFFSET page.

Exercise 5 – HOLD
Introduction We will now discover how to perform another lateral revision. Inserting a
holding pattern. Hold function enables you to fly a circuit at a constant
altitude and speed.
STEP 1: Your ATC has requested you to hold at a given waypoint.
1. Select the lateral revision page at the TO waypoint.
2. Select the HOLD function.
3. Observe the FMS has computed a HOLD for you and the HOLD is displayed as
a temporary on the ND.

destination, then return.
8. Clear the HOLD:
a. Press CLR on the keypad.
b. Select the HOLD.
Note: Using HOLD function through the FROM waypoint will create a holding at the present

Exercise 6 – OVERFLY
Introduction We will now discover how to perform immediate effect revisions starting with
overfly.
The trajectory curve is optimised to avoid overshot; as such a waypoint may
not be flown over. You can force the trajectory to fly over the point.
STEP 1: Your ATC has requested you overfly a specific point:
1. Select the OVFY function and observe it is written in the scratchpad.
2. Select the waypoint to be overflown and observe no temporary phase.
WARNING: The pilot cannot cancel the overfly program.

Exercise 7 – DIRECT TO
Introduction We will now discover how to perform another immediate effect revision –
DIRECT TO. It enables you to go directly to a certain point.
STEP 1: You want to do directly to a given waypoint:
1. Select the DIR TO function.
2. Select a waypoint that you want to go directly to and observe the temporary
state on your ND.
3. Insert the modification.
Remember * indicates direct entry
NOTE: You cannot cancel the DIRECT TO, you need to manually add the previous
waypoints.

Exercise 8 – WAYPOINT CREATION/DELETION
Introduction We will now discover how to manually enter waypoints and clear them.
STEP 1: Enter the name of the waypoint you want to insert.
Note: You can access to waypoints around the aircraft position by using WPT mode of the
ND.
STEP 2: Press the waypoint before which one you want to enter the point.

Note: This action leads to F-PLN discontinuity.
STEP 4: You can now remove this waypoint from flight plan. To do this, you just have
press the CLR key of the keypad and select lateral revision key of the concerned
waypoint.
Again, this deletion may cause the creation of discontinuities.

Exercise 9 – Lateral Navigation Practice
Introduction We will now discover the Lateral flight guidance modes.
Comply with the ATC request: turn left 30°.
1. Pull your HDG/TRK knob to revert to selected heading and observe your FMA
changing to HDG mode.
Your flight present heading will be maintained, the flight plan is indicated in dashed.
Comply with the ATC request: resume own navigation.
2. Push HDG/TRK mode to revert to managed mode.
Observe FMA. As you are out of flight plan, NAV mode arm (blue) but does not
re-engage.
3. Arrange your heading to re-intercept the flight plan before the TO waypoint.
WARNING : If you are too far from the flight plan, NAV mode will be armed but will not re-
engage.
To enable NAV mode to engage, you must select a heading that will make the aircraft cross
the flight plan before the TO waypoint.
If this waypoint has been overpassed, use DIR TO function to next waypoint.
