Starters Speaking Instructions to Teachers

Use these prompts to go through the test with your students. Explain that during the exam you
will be the usher and will introduce each child to the examiner.

[Usher to examiner] Hello. This is…. (Point at the large picture.


[Examiner] Hello …. My name is ….. Ask questions about two of the people
or things in the picture.)
(Point at the large picture and ask some questions. Excellent! Now, (child’s name), what's this?
Here are some examples.) (Point at one of the birds.)
Look at this, (child's name).
(Show the child the large picture.) What colour is it?
This is a park. It’s a beautiful day. And how many birds are there?
(Child's name), where’s the boat? (child’s name), what’s the girl doing?
[Back up question: Is this the boat?]
Good! And where are the children? (Ask the child questions about some of the cards.
Here are some examples.)
(Place all 8 small cards on desk next to the picture. What's this, (child’s name)?
Ask the child to place the small cards on the large picture. Have you got a dog?
Here are some examples.) What’s your favourite animal?
Now look at these. Which is the ball?
I’m putting the ball on the table. Now you put the ball What’s this?
between the fish and the boat. Have you got a computer?

Good! Which is the lizard?
