MUSICAL ARTS | GROUP 5
A. Opening Prayer
B. Opening Activity
Good afternoon everyone! Mabuhay blessed be God forever.
For today, we will be discussing musical arts, but before that, we have prepared a game for you
called "Guess the song". You'll just have to guess the song based from a series of pictures shown
in the screen. You may type your answer in the chat box below. Hint: All the songs are OPM.
So, let's begin.
GUESS THE SONG
Paubaya by Moira Dela Torre
Moira Dela Torre's new song 'Paubaya' (To Entrust) Is All About An Unrequited Love. The song
tells us to forgive, to accept, and to let go of the things in the past. It enlightens our hearts to
entrust our path to the Lord.
Lifetime by Ben&Ben
Lifetime was written by Ben&Ben members Paolo and Miguel Benjamin. The title of the song
mainly alludes to the idea that if that person was in fact bold enough to make a move, the two of
them may have indeed spent a “lifetime” together. And the lesson here is to express how you
really feel so that in the end you won’t regret anything, right?
Tatsulok by Bamboo
The song Tatsulok was composed by singer/songwriter Rom Dongeto in 1989. It was first
originally performed in 1991 by Buklod. However, the song rose to prominence in 2007 when
Bamboo had his rendition and his version has become one of the most noteworthy anthem in
activism. The song emphasizes the value of its lyrics to its audience; to teach, to moralize, and to
instruct the Filipino people that it is time to take an action to give an end to the incessant chaos
and struggles in the country brought by the bigger problem in the society.
With A Smile by Eraserheads
"With a Smile" is a single by the Eraserheads from their second album Circus & Aloha
Milkyway. The song is about a sad and troubled girl being comforted by a man. There is a scene
at the ending where monster surrounded the girl, then showing up in a place full of happiness
after. It shows that the girl probably found peace after the man helped her, with the lines "Now
it's time to kiss away those tears goodbye".
Indeed, every song has its own story to tell, and its own message to convey. It often stimulates
how or what we feel or what we are fighting for. But what does music really means? May I call
on Ms. Loisa Regala to dicuss to us the definition of music.
C. Discussion Proper
Good afternoon everyone, I’m here today to discuss the definition of Music.
i. Definition of Music
● Music
- “Music” derives from the Greek word “mousike”, which means “Art of Muses”
- It is the art of mixing vocal or instrumental sounds, or even both, in order to achieve
beauty, harmony, and emotional expression.
- According to Lennox (2008), It is different things to different people. It has
transcendental significance that is captured in the beautiful patterns of nature and
architecture, a kind of “frozen music.” it can bridge cultures in a universal conversation
that is beyond intellect or reason, but which is heartfelt. Music (singing) takes us to a
world apart: a world beyond self and ego, a place of emotion that touches the soul.
- It is a pure magic. It moves us and soothes us. It stimulates. It makes us want to dance
and sing. Makes us happy or sad, inspired or uplifted. Affects our moods.
- It tells stories. It breaks hearts, reduces us to tears, or seduces us into falling in love over
and over again. It is a universal language.
- It is a mystery, a code; a vehicle of spirit and soul. It is perceived through hearing the
vibration of sound, the most sublime resonance – from the eardrum to the brain. It moves
us beyond the intellect to the heart.
- It is culture from every origin; it is identity and belonging. It is history and invention. It is
remembering and forgetting. Music is symmetry, rebellion, genius, prodigy, mastery etc.
- It is a question that has no ultimately fixed answer.
● Did you know?
- By clapping hands, our ancestors have developed rhythmic music. This may be traced
back to the earliest musical instruments, when someone discovered that smacking stones
or sticks together doesn't damage your hands nearly as much as smacking them together
does. As a result, we know that music is ancient, possibly from the beginning of human
evolution.
● Musical Arts
- “Musical arts” or “music-making” means much more than playing music or listening to
it. Singing, rapping, and producing musicals are also part of the musical arts.As well as
the composing music, reading music, analyzing, arranging, notating, and creating music.
● Fun Fact
- The Hurrian Hymn No. 6 is the world's oldest song, had been sung about 3,400 years ago.
The song is said to be a rhyme of an ancient goddess, Nikkai.
ii. Functions of Music
● Functions of Music
○ Good afternoon! I’ll be discussing the different functions of music.
● Alan Merriam’s Musical Functions : Musical Functionalism
○ According to Alan Merriam, any use of music, within any culture, could be seen
as fulfilling one or more of the functions that he provided. His work was part of a
larger theory called musical functionalism, which holds that music can be
understood by examining how it contributes to the activities people engage in. In
other words, by answering the question, “what does music do for people?”
○ Before discussing these functions, it is important for you to remember that
functions don’t tell us anything about the way music sounds because we have
different vocabulary for that, they just describe what people do with the music.
By applying these musical functions, we can answer the question, “why are these
people making/playing/using this music?”
● Worship
○ All over the world, music is used in various forms of religious worship and
spiritual activities. Songs like At the Cross, Hosanna, and even instrumental
music are used during worship.
● Validation of Social Institutions and Religious Rituals
○ Music also validates a ritual, making it feel like a normal way to pray. For
instance, in St. Agnes Academy we always have our lectio divina before class,
and to put us in the mood of prayer, instrumental music is played as the speaker
recites the readings. We should also take note that this function doesn’t apply only
to religious situations, but also more broadly to any situation in which a social
institution is at work.
● Emotional Expression
○ Music sometimes helps us to express how we feel. In certain situations, music
may seem to convey thoughts or feelings in ways that words can’t. In these cases,
music is being used for emotional expression.
○ For example, those people na takot ma-friendzone may usually listen to
Ben&Ben’s Pagtingin kasi that song exactly describes how they feel. Di man nila
ma-put into words yung feelings nila, at least there’s a song to do it.
● Communication
○ Music is also used to convey a message. Most of the time, it is done with the help
of the lyrics where the words can tell us what the song is about. However, even
purely instrumental music can communicate something. For example, kung
songs using spotify for the sake of patama to their crushes or exes.
● Strengthening nationalism
○ Music also strengthens nationalism by unifying people with compellings songs
like Lupang Hinirang, our national anthem.
● Aesthetic Enjoyment
○ As discussed last quarter, “Aesthetics” refers to a theory of beauty, to how you
can tell if something is beautiful. People always have their preferences, so we can
say that there are different aesthetics. When music is used for aesthetic
enjoyment, we mean that it is enjoyed because we find it beautiful.
○ This explains why we shouldn’t bully people for their music taste. For instance,
Filipinos who love listening to kpop were bullied on social media noon kasi raw
di naman naiintindihan yung song. Like, why can’t they just let people enjoy
things. They listen to it because they find it beautiful. Besides, sa rami ba naman
ng color coded lyrics sa yt, lyrics are easily understood. What’s ironic pa is that I
know a lot of people, lalo na boys, who hate kpop noon, pero ngayon they’re a big
fan na of groups like Twice.
● Entertainment
○ All around the world, music is used for entertainment. With the current situation
brought by the pandemic, music as an entertainment distracts us from monotony.
○ For example, at first marami satin ang wala mang balak mag-TikTok, but just like
dalgona coffee, the lockdown made us use it. And TikTok uses music which
makes it more entertaining. Songs like Pajama Party were even popularized by
that platform.
● Collaboration with other arts
○ Music is also used in collaboration with other arts. For example, fashion shows
play songs as the models walk for more feels.
● Physical Response
○ Music may also cause your body to react in some way, and that’s a physical
response. Though dancing is a common physical response to music, there are also
other physical responses. Just like my example a while ago, pag narinig mo na
yung Regnum Dei, tatakbo ka agad lalo na pag terror yung teacher. Crying can
also be a physical response. Imagine niyo na lang na kung may face to face
graduation, iyakan na ang iba pag kumanta na ng graduation song.
● Contribution to the Continuity and Stability of Culture
○ Music can also be used to keep certain ideas alive in a culture over time. An
example of this is Parokya ni Edgar’s Harana, which depicts courtship here in our
country.
● Enforcing Conformity to Social Norms
○ A “social norm” is a behavior that is commonly expected. And music is
sometimes used to teach it. A good example of this is Colgate’s song, yung
“Brush, brush, brush, three times a day. Brush brush brush to keep cavities away,”
which obviously teach kids to brush their teeth.

iv. Stereotypes in Music Genrez
● Jazz/Rhythm and Blues
○ These genre were mostly associated with peacefulness, spirituality and
amazement because of how musicians perceive it’s rhythm and music
○ Examples of Jazz/Rhythm and Blues music: Like a Lover by Sergio Mendes, Just
the two of us by Bill Withers and many more
● Pop Music
○ Pop music is the genre of popular music that produces the most hits. They have a
good rhythm, a catchy melody, and are easy to remember and sing along to. They
usually have a chorus that's repeated several times and two or more verses. Pop
music artist usually creates songs with a good beat but deep down when you
deeply understand it’s lyrics it doesn’t have enough sense and doesn’t even fit
what it’s all about. (Example of Pop music: Like a Prayer by Madonna, Thriller
by Michael Jackson)
● Heavy metal
○ Heavy metal is a genre of rock music, this genre are used to known as violent,
loud and angry. And was developed, in the late 1960's and early 1970's. (Example
of Heavy metal bands: Metallica, Helloween, Iron Maiden)
● Rap
○ This genre has been the center of controversy ever since its fluid beats and
shocking lyrics hit the musical world. Many people often bring up that rap is
misogynistic and that “misogyny in gangsta rap is the promotion, glamorization,
support, humorization, justification, or normalization of oppressive ideas about
women” (Adams, 940).
○ Rap is commonly influenced and listened to by our younger generation. It is often
upbeat music and consists of primarily male artists.
○ Rap is one of the most distinctive features of hip-hop. Rappers use rhythm, lyrics,
and vocal tone to express themselves. The best rappers are distinguished by their
“flow” – the way the words run together without the performer getting tongue-
tied. (Example of Rap music: 'Till I Collapse by Eminem)
v. Significance of Music
● Music is so much a part of benign reality.
○ It’s one of the ways we remember how good it is to be alive, how exuberant we
can be, how much we love to experiment and explore all kinds of different things.
We human beings love beauty. We love to move, we love rhythm. If you watch
young people, they gravitate toward any beat or music. They want to be right
there in the centre. It is so great that the word “play” goes with music. Human
beings are naturally, inherently playful, and when we make music, we are playing.
○ Party songs, emote while nasa long night drives, feeling mo nasa music video ka
or coming of age movies and such.
● Music reminds people about being human and it unites people.
○ When music is happening, people get more connected. The capitalist system is
about disconnection, and music reminds us of our connection; it draws us
together. We are contradicting hopelessness, despair, and urgency. And we’re not
just doing it for somebody else, we’re doing it for ourselves.
○ Jammings
○ Fight song during the pandemic
● Music is a language of emotion.
○ It can represent different feelings and barge into the soul with no boundaries or
limitations. People are always challenged by the fact that “no one understands
them” or know how they “really feel”, so they turn to music.
○ In times of distress, we all do. Oftentimes we may even notice that depending on
the situation, we will literally believe the song was written for us. This is what we
call the musical epiphany or the “sign”.
○ Music also has the capacity to imitate emotions. The temporal patterns of music
mimic our emotional lives — The introduction, buildup, climax, and closure. A
slow tempo will naturally represent sadness, while a more upbeat tune is more
courageous and happy.
○ Happy songs, sad songs, crush life (Pagtingin and Nangangamba by Zack
Tabudlo)
● Music is an epitome of change
○ The combination of the right lyrics, rhythm and instruments can build a group
identity, stir strong emotions, engage audiences and amass people to take action.
This makes music the perfect partner for social change.
○ Music has long been used by movements seeking social change. Freedom songs
played an essential role bolstering courage, inspiring participation, and fostering a
sense of community. (National anthem, bayan ko)
○ Tatsulok
D. Reflection (Questions)
● How could you use the art of music in advocating social justice, peace, and change
during this time of uncertainty and chaos?
● Do you agree that music is an extension and reflection of your being? Why or why
not?
Indeed, music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life
to everything. Thank you once again. Blessed be God forever.
E. Closing Prayer
God our Father in heaven, we thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn and to share our
ideas. May we all finish this day with a happy and contented heart. This we pray, through Christ
our Lord. Amen.
