Components of a Computer

Different Components
Learning objectives
● Identify different parts of a computer and explain what they do
and how they communicate with each other

Learning Objectives
Starter
What do all the following devices have in common?
Inside or out?
Computers are made up of different parts. All computers have the same parts
just different sizes depending on the type of the computer it is and the outside
may look different to others just like you and me!
Activity: Inside or out?
Create 2 slides, Internal and External. Use the list below to find images of the different
parts and add them to the correct slide with names.
● Motherboard ● Microphone
● Keyboard ● CPU
● Mouse ● Graphics Card
● ROM
● Screen
● RAM
● Speakers
● Hard Disk Drive
● CPU fan

Write a brief description of what each part does

Input or Output?
The function of a computer is to input data, process it and output the resulting
information. Computers can only interact with the world using input and output
devices.
● Input devices allow the user to enter data and information ready for
processing, they are not always human controlled
● Output devices output data and information produced by a computer and
turn it into a human readable form
When designing computer systems we need to know what information will be
input and output to be able to decide on the best devices to allow us to do the
best job.
Activity: input and output devices
Add two more slides to your presentation, one with the title, Input devices and the
other with the title, Output devices.
● Use your internal and external slides to copy pictures from of any devices or
parts that you think belong to the input slide and the output slide, can you add
any of your own devices?
● Write a brief description of what an input device is used for and what an output
device is used for

What device can be both an input and an output device?
