CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

For students growing up in the digital age, social media platforms

have become part of life. The most popular of these platforms is TikTok,
especially with younger age groups. TikTok, launched by ByteDance in
2016, gives users the ability to create and share short videos, which are
often set to music and dance clips. TikTok can be either a source of
entertainment or social connection but in latter days, the impact it has
on students’ time management has taken center stage and become an
area of concern as well as academic research. When a TikTok user
receives involvement through a “like,” “follow,” or “comment,” or merely
feels enthusiastic about accessing their content and this will make them
happy and feel satisfaction (Silberling, 2021). For instance, TikTok users
tend to get addicted to TikTok because of the features and trending
videos that can lead to their effect on their study. TikTok’s entertainment
material is addicting and is frequently utilized to relieve boredom

According to Ciplak (2020), TikTok has the ability to attract users

and create an addiction that makes it difficult to stop using the
application once it’s used. People get more and more dependent on social
media the more time they spend on it each week. TikTok’s tendency to
cause distractions and procrastination is one of its primary
disadvantages — we can quickly become distracted and lose important
concentration from our study materials by the never-ending stream of
interesting movies. The impact of TikTok on students’ mental health and
wellbeing also plays a role in their time management. While the platform
can provide a temporary escape from academic stress, it can also
contribute to anxiety and stress when students realize they have spent
excessive time on the app at the expense of their responsibilities. The
addictive nature of TikTok, driven by its algorithm, can lead to
compulsive usage patterns that are difficult to break, further
exacerbating time management issues. Meanwhile, the reach of TikTok
also has deep implications for how students relate to one another and
structure their days. It can help in increasing social connectivity among
students so that they share experiences and interact with each other.
But it can also be very isolating and students should not overdo virtual
interactions instead of real human communications. The time you spend
on TikTok can impinge on other necessary activities, such as time for
sport, sleep or personal hobbies, and create an unbalanced way of living.
Grade 10 is a critical period for students as they prepare for
higher education and future careers. Effective time management is
essential for their success. This study seeks to understand if TikTok
usage is hindering their ability to manage time effectively, which could
have long-term implications.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effects of TikTok usage on grade
10 students’ time management at San Quintin National High School.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Why do students use TikTok?

2. How does TikTok usage affect students’ academic performance like
the ability to meet deadlines and complete academic activities on
time?
3. What is the students level of TikTok usage?
4. Is there significant differences in time management practices
between grade 10 students who use TikTok frequently and those
who use it less frequently

Hypothesis
The hypothesis of this study states that there is no significant
effect between TikTok usage with the time management of the grade 10
students’ due to the influence of the TikTok application to them.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

This research delimits its coverage only to the grade 10 students
at San Quintin National High School. This research investigates how
pupils in grade 10 manage their time when using TikTok. The main focus
is on how grade 10 students’ manage their personal time, extracurricular
activities, and academic obligations is affected by the amount of time
they spend on TikTok.

Significance of the Study

This study focuses to the effects of TikTok usage on grade 10
students time management. This study in important for several reasons.
Firstly, it provides factual insight into how students in Grade 10 manage
their time usage in relation to TikTok, a popular social media app.
Understanding the effects of TikTok usage on students time management
is beneficial for the following:
Parents. This study will conceive the parents to supervise their children
when using TikTok, especially when it comes to time management of
their children.

Teachers. They will benefit from this study — it is to teach the students
about the function of TikTok application. Additionally, they will know
how effective the TikTok is in the new way of learning and how they can
use it for their lessons to teach students.

Students. As the main focus population of this study, this study will
benefit them to know what TikTok is all about, how TikTok works, and
how it affects them positively or negatively in many aspects.

Future Researchers. This research study will serve as a guide to the

future researchers because it will give them a knowledge and an idea to
this kind of study.

Conceptual Framework

Basically, the independent variable of the study is the time usage

of grade 10 students which is considered as the cause of the study. The
dependent variable of the study is how grade 10 students manage their
time, which is assumed to be the effect. The extraneous variable would
be a confounded to take a look whether the academic performance,
socioeconomic status, screen time from other digital application of the
students have something to do with their time management.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related studies and literature that the
researcher looked at to back up the study’s conclusions. These acted as
the basis for creating the study’s framework.

Foreign Literature
In a cinematic study of TikTok, Bresnick (2019), in his study
analyzes TikTok, a social media video platform, through film theory and
cultural analysis. In short videos, it tackles the function of play and
changing production. The investigation looks at how TikTok's social
conditions are influenced by remake culture. Furthermore, the study
portrays TikTok as a "virtual playground" where ideas for creating TikTok
videos are comparable to traditional playground equipment. Teenagers
and kids make up the majority of the user population for TikTok, the
social media app with the fastest rate of growth. On the other hand,
violent movements' existence on TikTok has gone unnoticed. Due to its
distinct characteristics—namely, its youthful user base and status as the
newest—the platform is more challenging. In order to shield viewers from
offensive content, TikTok should implement its own Terms of Conditions
and take note of what other platforms have learned. (Weimann and
Masri, 2020). According to Duguma, Abadefar, & Tessema (2024), their
study explores the impact of TikTok on university students' CGPA.
Results show that TikTok has a positive effect on CGPA when used for
spirituality, education, entertainment, and information. However,
prolonged use, daily time spent, and browsing frequency negatively affect
CGPA. The study suggests revising instructional strategies and providing
supervision on TikTok usage.
According to Ma & Yu (2021), before going global, businesses from
developing economies can use the distinctive qualities of their locality to
create creative business strategies. This letter demonstrates ByteDance's
creative TikTok app business model. ByteDance produced an article that
promotes the TikTok app as a combination of social and video
networking by using its huge and fast demanding home market. TikTok
showcases how businesses from developing nations can use creative
approaches to business to introduce successful overseas goods.
The impact of social media on education is one of the most
important studies. Because of the harm that social media does, this
study is frequently used by researchers. Numerous students had been
diverted from their learning by social media. Teachers were also worried
about students' poor performance as a result of their overuse of social
media. The findings of the research showed that factors such as
distraction, addiction, health issues, and time management are
connected to students' academic success. (Nizam, Azman, & Ibrahim,
2021). In other’s study finds that there is a lack of research on the
impact of self-control in TikTok social media use on academic
procrastination in students as stated by Suprayogi & Shahab (2023).
Therefore, it was discovered that students' academic procrastination is
greatly and positively influenced by their use of self-control when using
TikTok. Moreover, the study of Siliman (2024) focuses at the relationship
between procrastination, academic stress, and TikTok usage among
the students. The usage of TikTok and academic stress have a significant
connection, according to the results, and procrastination does not affect
the association. The study adds to the body of information regarding how
social media affects academic performance. Relatively, the findings of
Yuliana et al.'s (2023) study, there are two effects of the TikTok online
application on students: positive effects where students learn new things
and have new experiences, and negative effects where students forget
things easily, get dependent, neglect their health, and lots more.
Additionally, TikTok users frequently misuse the platform or go too far,
creating videos that give off a bad vibe and unintentionally showing
viewers something that they shouldn't. In addition to the previous
studies, in the classroom action research project, which was conducted
by Ferstephanie & Pratiwi (2022), 25 science students in grade 10 at
SMA Kristen Kalam Kudus Selatpanjang participated. The purpose of the
study was to find out how well TikTok can help pupils with their
speaking. With an average score of 4.65 points, the results showed that
students' scores increased dramatically after using TikTok. The study's
findings demonstrated the TikTok app's potential in the classroom by
showing how well it engaged students in the learning process and
enhanced their speaking abilities.
This study looks at how TikTok has affected people's behavior and
the way of life, particularly in terms of how it has altered how people use
technology, as noted by Panta (2024). The goal of the study on him is to
comprehend the ways in which social media sites such as TikTok might
affect social dynamics, cultural norms, and individual behavior in
Baglung. He focuses on the ways that TikTok impacts family dynamics
and how it plays a part in people's lives. His research is essential to
comprehending how TikTok and online entertainment affect people and
families, as well as for planning future investigations.
Local Literature
In the study of Diaz et al. (2023) states that TikTok is a media
software that allows users to create and share short films. TikTok may
help people socialize, as they can express themselves, share their
experiences, and connect with others. Their study determined student
perspectives regarding TikTok's perceived popularity. To analyze and
make meaning out of the information collected from 266 seniors in high
school, they employed descriptive quantitative analysis. The students
agreed, according to the study's findings, that Tiktok's capabilities and
adaptability make it a popular app for various types of productions. It
was discovered to have a significant impact on Tiktok's rising popularity.
Therefore, it can only be assumed that Gen Z users are becoming more
and more interested in this application. In accordance with Araujo et al.
(2022), their study reveals that the emotional, entertaining, and
informative dimensions of TikTok video advertisements positively
influence consumer behavior, with the emotional dimension being the
most significant. Their research can help students, professors,
marketers, and advertising agencies understand customer behavior on
TikTok and improve strategies to address their needs. The findings of
their study can help students, professors, marketers, and advertising
agencies better understand and cater to Generation Z's preferences,
ultimately leading to better content creation and purchase intention on
the platform.
As stated by Salasac & Lobo (2022), the connection between BPeA
students at City College of Angeles' TikTok usage and attendance. The
results indicate a positive association between responsible and moderate
app use. The researchers advise thr Education, Arts, and Sciences (IEAS)
and College Guidance Office (CGO) to work together to offer lectures and
instruction on TikTok's impact on student involvement. Teachers should
also make use of the app to improve the educational setting in the
classroom. Based on the observation of Decenilla (2022), A lot of learners
regard history as restrictive due to its focus on narrate teaching, which
limits their capacity to develop skills in critical thinking. The researchers
used their own mini-lecture Tiktok videos as an intervention to improve
the students' understanding in order to address the problem. The
findings showed that students' prior knowledge, which was classified as
deficient had improved in regard to chosen historical topics. In this case,
students showed how using Tiktok videos might positively impact
students' learning behavior by inspiring their interest to study.
Students frequently utilize TikTok as a form of amusement during
their free time between or after classes. In this study, it showed that
there is no apparent gender disparity in TikTok consumption or level of
engagement. Furthermore, a significant connection between amount of
involvement and usage of TikTok was found. At last, there is a beneficial
relationship between student involvement and TikTok consumption. The
study presents a fresh perspective on how students' levels of
participation might be favorably impacted by using the TikTok app
responsibly. (Lobo et al., 2022). Relatively, in the study of Calonia et al.
(2023) regarding to management of time, proficiency in time
management, setting goals, procrastination, and sociability are essential
for learning success to enhance outputs, projects, and quality of life, all
of which contribute to higher academic attainment. The results of their
study indicate that there is a moderate general state of time
management. The degree of academic success is outstanding. Analysis
showed that there is little correlation between time management skills
and academic success. The results indicate that academic achievement
in the population under consideration may not be strongly predicted by
time management efficiency as measured by the capacity to prioritize
tasks, procrastination tendencies, and degree of socialization.
The study by Revensencio et al. (2022) examines the impact of
watching TikTok on the English grammar skills development of 20-year-
old female college students in Western Visayas. The majority of
respondents, who had average final grades between 1.75-1.99 in English
subjects, spent 30 minutes to an hour watching TikTok videos with
English grammar-related content daily. Most of them found TikTok
helpful in discovering and understanding new English words, but some
videos confused their grammar use. The study suggests that watching
TikTok has a more positive impact on English grammar skills. In the
study of others, the study of Alvarez et al. (2024), students in Grade 10
at Central Bicol State University of Agriculture's Sipocot Laboratory High
School investigate how the TikTok app affects their acquisition of a
second language. The study sought to determine the perceived influence
of TikTok on learning a second language, evaluate its use with reference
to grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, and demonstrate a
meaningful correlation between TikTok use and language learning. The
researchers found that TikTok was regularly used extensively in the
domains of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Notably, there was
considerable confirmation of the association between TikTok usage and
its perceived influence on learning a second language. The positive
opinions of students support the study's conclusion that TikTok has a
beneficial impact on language learning in the designated domains. The
researchers advise language instructors to use the TikTok app as a
resource to help students with their pronunciation, grammar, and
vocabulary.
Garcia, Juanatas, and Juanatas (2022) studied TikTok's
programming of videos, finding that the platform has both entertainment
and informative content. The study found that TikTokers often share tips
and tricks, but they do not follow the platform's ethos when producing
educational content. This deviation suggests that TikTok aims to educate
rather than entertain. Their study highlights the potential of TikTok as a
platform for nanolearning and offers insightful information for creating
practical scholarly implications, policies, and recommendations
surrounding the platform's use. Based on the observation of Ngilangil
(2022), TikTok is a popular social media platform. It has gained
significant influence and engagement among students at Surigao del
Norte State University. The study examined the frequency of students
viewing TikTok, its content, quality, and music, and its engagement
factors. The results showed that TikTok was highly influential and had a
significant relationship with students. The study recommends that
guidelines on using social media, particularly TikTok, should be crafted
and implemented through a school campaign spearheaded by the
Student Government Council. The study highlights the importance of
engaging with students on social media platform

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

An overview of the research methods used in this chapter are

provided, the methods are Research Design, Sampling and Sampling
Method, Subject of the Study, Data Gathering Instrument, Data
Gathering Procedure, Treatment of Data. The researcher describes the
research design that was chosen for the purpose of this study and the
reasons for this choice. It provides who the participants are and how they
(the participants) will be sampled and the target population too. The
instrument that will be used for data collection is also described. The
researcher discusses the procedures that will be use to analyze the data
that will be gathered. The researchers will also talk about what are the
procedures used to analyze and interpret the collected data.

Research Design

The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine how the use

of Tiktok affects the time management skills of grade 10 pupils. For this
study, the researchers used a non-experimental research design and
applied survey research as one of the quantitative research methods.
Researchers can summarize the characteristics of a large population by
using survey research, which involves asking a group of people
questions, receiving their answers, and then analyzing the data.

Sampling and Sampling Method

The population of the study are the grade 10 students enrolled in

San Quintin National High School. The researchers are aiming for 50
respondents from grade 10 students at San Quintin National High
School. The aim of the study is to conduct a survey using Purposive
Sampling under Non-Probability Sampling in order to select respondents
who use TikTok application. Purposive sampling is a non-probability
sampling technique in which the researcher carefully chooses
participants based on specific characteristics relevant to the research
question. This method allows for a targeted selection of participants who
exhibit a range of TikTok usage habits, ensuring a more thorough
exploration of the relationship between TikTok usage and time
management.
Research Instrument

The instrument we will be using in collecting data is survey

questionnaire. Since the respondents are the Grade 10 Students of San
Quintin National High School, they can read and answer the
questionnaire with ease.

The survey questionnaire to be prepared focused on answering the

statement of the problem. The data gathering instrument was structured
as a multiple choices questions which allow students to answer the
questions easily. The researchers will also apply matrix type of
questionnaire to acquire the students level of TikTok usage.

Data Gathering Procedure

To guarantee accuracy and reliability, the data gathering

procedure for this study included multiple steps.

Firstly, the researchers will make a survey questionnaire, if the

questionnaire got validated by the teacher, the researcher will multiply
the questionnaire to the number of copies sufficient to accommodate all
the respondents. After that, a letter would be given to the school
principal asking permission to conduct a survey inside the San Quintin
National High School, specifically, the Grade 10 students of SQNHS. The
researcher will start data gathering when the teacher gives the
researchers’ signal to do so.

The letter of approval and the copies of questionnaires will be

delivered personally by the researchers to the respondents. During the
delivery of the survey questionnaire copies, the researcher will explain
the details to help the respondents accomplish the questionnaires and
we will also collect the questionnaire on the same day of delivery. The
questionnaire’s results from the copies that were retrieved will be
tabulated. Subsequently, the data will be analyzed and interpreted.

Treatment of Data
The following statistical tools will be used to guide the research
questions:
Frequency and Percentage: this will be use to know the effect of
TikTok on grade 10 students at San Quintin National High School.
Mean: use to assess all of the total effects of TikTok application
among the selected grade 10 students at San Quintin National High
School.
Pearson Correlation: to determine the specific relationship
between TikTok app to the grade 10 students.
