Worksheet:
1. Community or Region: Cadiz City Proper
2. Identified Hazards:
○ Natural Hazards:
■ Hazard 1: Flood
■ Hazard 2: Storm Surge
■ Hazard 3: Earthquake
○ Technological or Societal Hazards:
■ Hazard 1: Fire Hazard
■ Hazard 2: Infectious Disease
■ Hazard 3: Flood
3. Vulnerability Factors:
○ Social Factors: Population Density
○ Economic Factors: Livelihood
○ Environmental Factors: Improper Waste Disposal
4. Visual Representation: Use the online mapping tool to mark the identified
hazards on the map. Add labels, symbols, or annotations to highlight the hazards
and vulnerability factors.
5. Presentation: Prepare a brief presentation to share your hazard map and
vulnerability assessment with the class. Explain your reasoning behind the
identified hazards and vulnerability factors.
Storm Surge- due to the geographic location which is near the sea, it’s
valid enough to consider that storm surge may happen.
Flood as natural hazard- due to the presence of bodies of water like the
Cadiz River and the sea water during high tide, some of the communities
in Cadiz City experience flood.
Earthquake- last time, all of our group members have experienced the
earthquake which also happened in Cadiz City. Though we have proven
through research that Cadiz City is away from fault line, still, it
experiences this natural hazard. So, it’s valid enough that earthquake may
happen again.
Fire- due to population density and the households’ status (refers to the
distances of houses and what they are made of), fire hazard may happen.
Infectious Disease- the same as the fire hazard, infectious disease may
be due to the population density, and the households’ status. More than
that, demography may also contribute to the identification of this hazard.
Flood as technological hazard- due to improper waste disposal of
people in the community (despite of the rule and regulations given by the
local government, people tend to neglect them), the flood hazard may
happen. This flood has been led by the wastes which clog the water
drainages.
6. Comparison and Discussion: Participate in a class discussion to compare and
contrast the findings from different groups. Discuss the commonalities and
differences in hazard identification and vulnerability factors across different
communities or regions.
As per discussed, the groups have in common in terms of natural
hazards. We found out that our communities experience flood, earthquake,
and storm surges. These were due to the same factor which is their
geographic locations (near sea water). On the other hand, our group differ
from the others in terms of infrastructures and industrial presence. We found
out that u like ours, they have industries which greatly contribute to the health
hazard due to air quality.
Reflection Questions:
1. What did you learn from this hazard mapping and vulnerability assessment
activity?
We've learned that having skills in utilizing hazard maps and
vulnerability assessments offers several benefits. One important
advantage is that it provides us with valuable information about the risks
specific to our local area. This knowledge helps us understand potential
threats or hazards that could occur nearby, for example, natural hazards
such as earthquakes, floods, or storm surges. By being aware of these
hazards, we can take the necessary steps to ensure our personal safety
and protect our loved ones. It allows us to be proactive and prepared
before any disaster strikes. Armed with this understanding, we can make
well-informed decisions about safety measures, preparedness, and
strategies for minimizing the impact of these hazards. For example, we
can secure our homes and assemble emergency kits in advance.
2. How do hazards and vulnerability factors interrelate in determining the level of
risk in a community or region?
The hazards and vulnerability factors interrelate in determining the
level risks in a community or region in a way that it helps us understand the
potential impact and severity of a hazard. As a result, addressing the
identified vulnerabilities, can reduce the potential risks. Through it also, the
capacity of a community to recover from those events can be improved.
3. Why is understanding hazards and vulnerability important in disaster
management and preparedness efforts?
There are advantages in understanding hazards and
vulnerability. In general it help us build resilience in our community.
Further, here are the specific advantages it give us. First, we will be
provided with the knowledge of these hazards and vulnerabilities
which can lead us to plan and be prepared, by assessing the
potential risks, and as a result will reduce their negative effects.
Then, it can drive us to the implementation of warning systems
which increases our preparedness. In addition, it can raise more
public awareness by implementing policies and informations. Lastly,
it can help us build infrastructures that could withstand hazardous
events.
4. How can this activity contribute to building resilience in communities?
First, it can help us plan for better preparation, thus improving our
preparedness to deal and recover from the hazards. Next is, it can help us create
better policy and governance, which in return can improve our communication
with the community members to raise awareness of the implemented policies and
rules. Lastly, it helps us in building infrastructures that could withstand the risks
brought the hazards.
