1.0 RATIONALE:

Traffic engineering is an important aspect of all modes of transportation. Due to the

abundant growth in population and infrastrucure development, there is urgent need
to pay the immediate attention to the certain issues like designing traffic control
device installations and modifications, including traffic signals, signs, and pavement
markings. Also it is important for safety of vehicle users as well as pedestrians. This
course is expected to develop knowledge of performing various traffic surveys,
analyze and interpret the data and provide the solutions in the form of traffic
controlling devices. The civil engineering diploma holders have to do the related
construction and maintenance activities of the structures made for guiding the
traffic

6.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

INTRODUCTION
Road signs are visual communication tools placed along roads to convey information,
guidance, and warnings to drivers, pedestrians, and other road users. They play a crucial
role in ensuring safe and efficient movement of traffic.

Importance of Road Signs:

1. Enhance road safety
2. Reduce accidents and injuries
3. Minimize congestion and traffic delays
4. Provide critical information to pedestrians and cyclists
5. Support efficient transportation infrastructure

Type of road signs

1.regulatory signs:
These signs are also called mandatory signs .These signs are mainly intended for the safety
of other road users. These signs have generally black legend on a white background. They
are circular in shape with red borders. Regulatory sign are meant to inform the road users
of certain laws, regulations and prohibitions. Violation of these signs is a legal offence.

Types of Regulatory Signs:

1. Speed Limit Signs

2. Traffic Signal Signs
3. Parking Signs
4. Access Control Signs
5. Pedestrian and Bicycle Signs
6. Weight and Size Signs
7. Turn and Movement Signs
8. Lane Usage Signs
9. Passing Signs
10. Traffic Regulation Signs

Examples of Regulatory Signs:

1. Stop Sign
2. Yield Sign
3. Do Not Enter Sign
4. One Way Sign
5. No Left/Right Turn Sign
6. No Parking Sign
7. Speed Limit 35 mph Sign
8. Traffic Signal Ahead Sign
9. Pedestrian Crossing Sign
10. Bike Lane Sign
2.Warning signs:
Warning or cautionary signs are used to warn the road users of certain hazardous
conditions that exist on or adjacent to the roadway.
The warning signs are in the shape of equilateral triangle with its apex pointing upwards .
They have a white background, red border and black symbols.
The warning signs are to be located at sufficient distance in advance of the hazard warned
against, these distances are 120, 90, 60 and 40 meter respectively on National/State
highway, MDR, ODR and VR on urban roads this distance is 50 meter

Types of Warning Signs:

1. Curve and Intersection Signs

2. Pedestrian and Animal Crossing Signs
3. Railroad and Airport Signs
4. Hazard and Obstacle Signs
5. Weather and Road Condition Signs
6. Construction and Maintenance Signs
7. Traffic and Congestion Signs
8. School and Playground Signs
9. Emergency and Disaster Signs
10. Environmental and Wildlife Signs

Examples of Warning Signs:

1. Curve Ahead
2. Pedestrian Crossing
3. Railroad Crossing
4. Steep Hill
5. Flooded Road
6. Construction Ahead
7. Traffic Merging
8. School Zone
9. Deer Crossing
10. Slippery Road

3.Informatory Signs
These signs are used to guide the road users along routes, inform them of destination
and distance and provide with information to make travel easier, safe and pleasant .
The Information Signs are rectangular with blue background and white/ black letters
symbols. Some of these signs indicate public telephone, petrol pump, hospital, first aid
post, eating place and resting place.

 The information Signs are grouped under the following sub- heads
