Climbing Mount Fuji

1 Many people love to climb tall mountains all over the world. Mount Fuji, in Japan, is
one of the most famous mountains attracting visitors from all over the world.

2 The Beautiful Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is a very tall mountain measuring 12,389 ft. at its peak. Its gentle
slopes and perfectly shaped peak with a snow-capped top makes it a popular spot
for photographers and other artists. The mountain itself may look more beautiful in
pictures from afar than in close proximity. Up close, the mountain is covered with
rocks and rugged land. Some people don't realize that Mount Fuji is actually a
volcano.

3 History of Mount Fuji

The last time this volcano erupted was in 1708. People believe that the first person
to climb this mountain was a monk in the year 663. However, his name is
unknown. Up until 1868, only men were allowed to climb Mount Fuji. Lady Fanny
Parkes was the first non-Japanese woman to climb Mount Fuji in 1869.

Some artists want to paint it. Others want to write about it. Most people just want
to climb it. The official climbing season begins in July and ends in August. During this
time, the mountain is not usually covered with snow and the weather is milder.
Transportation to the mountain can be found more easily during this time. For
beginning climbers, it makes sense to climb during these two months. However,
climbing Mount Fuji is so popular during the summer that many adventurers are
faced with long lines of people wanting to take the trip to the top.

5 Climbing Mount Fuji is not as hard as other mountains because many trails have
been developed to help guide climbers to the top. There are plenty of signs marking
the various trails. These signs also caution hikers of dangerous places. Despite the
trails, a trek up the mountain still takes a long time. It can be very tiring as the air
thins towards the top of the mountain. Hikers must carry plenty of water. For
those looking for an easier trip up the mountain, there are huts along the way
where hikers can rest, eat, and even stay overnight. This requires money, of
course.

Getting Ready for the Climb

6 People who want to climb Mount Fuji shouldn't just show up in their regular clothes
with no supplies. The mountain is steep, rocky, and windy, so sturdy shoes or
boots and coats that repel wind and rain are best to wear. Some trails don’t have
as many huts as others, so having plenty of food and water for the entire climb is
important. The following is a list of the supplies needed to climb Mount Fuji:
