T. Y 01

2- What is difference b/w self and cross-pollination?

Self-Pollination Cross-pollination
It is the transfer of pollen grains It is the transfer of pollen grains
from the anther to stigma of the from the anther of one flower to
same flower. the stigma of another flower.

3- How do plants reproduce?

Plants are reproduced by both ways; Sexual and Asexual reproduction.
Review
1- Draw and label structure of flower.
See Question no. 1 (TY 1)
2- What conditions are necessary for seeds to germinate?
▪ Water
▪ Oxygen
▪ Heat
3- Draw and label a diagram of a monocot seed. Explain the function of its
parts.
➢ Seed coat
It protects everything inside the seed so that
it has a good chance of germinating.
➢ Endosperm
It is the tissue that surrounds the embryo and
provides it with nutrition
➢ Cotyledon
It is a seed leaf that emerges from the seed
when it germinates
➢ Embryo
The embryo where life starts within the seed
4- In what different ways are seeds scattered?
➢ Some seeds are sticky or have hooks or spikes. This means they
stick the animal body drop in a different place.
➢ Some seeds grow in fruit. The fruit is eaten by animals and the
seeds are carried inside the animals’ body. when animal produce
waste they start growing in ground
➢ Some seeds are very light which means they are blown through air
➢ Some seeds are heavy they fall to the ground due to gravity
➢ Some seeds live in seedpods. They burst and throw over large area.
➢ Some seeds float on water
5- What conditions are necessary for spores to germinate?
▪ Land on ground with nutrients
▪ Damp area
▪ Light
6- Write the life story of an angiosperm taking into account the following:
a. The Plant cell
Additional Q/A
1- What is stamen? Write its parts.
The stamen is the male part of the flower. It has two parts:
➢ Anther
➢ Filament
2- Write down role of anther and filament.
Anther is the part of stamen where pollen is produced.
Filament is the delicate stalk which holds up the anther.
3- What are petals?
The petals are usually large and colourful to attract insects.
4- Write down role of sepal.
The sepal protects the bud before it opens into a flower.
5- What is pistil?
The pistil is the female part. At the top of the pistil is the stigma then a
tube called the style which leads down to the ovary.
6- Define pollination.
Pollination is the process in which pollen grains from the anther are
transferred to the stigma of the same or another flower.
7- What is the end result of pollination?
Fertilization
8- When does fertilization occurs in plants?
Fertilization occurs when the pollen grows a tube down from the stigma to
the ovary where it fertilizes an ovum and a seed is formed.
9- Differentiate b/w sexual and asexual reproduction?
Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction
it involves the use of male and it involves just one plant and no
female reproductive cells reproductive cells (gametes)
(gametes)
New plant not identical to parent New plant is identical to parent cell
plant
10- Which one serve as the food source for the mature seed?
Cotyledons
11- Differentiate b/w monocot and dicot seed.
Monocot seed Dicot seed
The seed which have one The seed which have two
cotyledon is called monocot seed. cotyledons is called dicot seed.
Examples: chick pea seed Examples: maize seed
12- What is another name of seed coat?
Testa
13- What do you know about coco der palm seed?
It is the biggest plant seed. It can weigh up to 18 kg. they only grow on the
Seychelles Islands.
14- Difference b/w chickpea seed and maize seed.
Chickpea seed Maize seed
• Two cotyledons are present • One cotyledon is present
• Cotyledons are fleshy and • Cotyledon thin and small
store food and lack food material
• Endosperm is absent • Endosperm is present
15- Define germination of seeds.
The process which involves a seed becoming a plant is known as
germination.
16- How many years the scientists in Russia grew flowering plants from
seeds in ice?
30000 years
17- Where seeds are formed?
Seeds are formed in the flower of a plant.
18- Why coconut seed have a lot of air inside it?
