SAMPLE COLUMN DESIGN

Selected column for desin at Grid (D,8)

Calculation will be done for ground floor column. U
Concrete cover to reinforced beams:
We assume a mild exposure condition and fire resistance of as well.
By considering both of them select the cover size for the beam.
For durability requirement:
Let consider the grade of concrete as C30, Therefore,
fcu = 30N/mm2
Column
Table 3.3 Nominal cover for mild exposure condition = 25 mm nominal
Table 3.4 Nominal cover for fire resistance to 2 hours = 30 mm cover =
Select the column cover as 30 mm. 30mm

The required area of column is estimated by using the following

equation.

IStruct E Estimated Axial load for column from etabs model is about 3000kN
manual
Table5.0 N/Ac ≤ 0.35fcu + P/100(0.67fy-0.35fcu)

≤ (0.35x30) + (1.5/100)(0.67x460-0.35x30) = 14.97 N/mm2

Ac ≥ ( 3000 x 1000/14.97)

≥ 193, 720 mm2

So, required width of the square shape column = 440 mm
Select 450mm x 450mm size column.
Calculation for Loading on Coloum
Columns are loading not only from vertical loads, but also from
lateral loads. Considered wind load as lateral loads for this device.
Used software ETAB for model the structure. Followings are the
results obtained from model for Axial load, BM and SF. Applied
load combination are 1.2 Gk + 1.2Qk + 1.2W , 1.4Gk + 1.6 Qk and
1.4Gk + 1.4 Qk. Maximum loads are selected from these envelop.
Assumed column size is 300mmx500mm

Axial Load (1.2 Gk + 1.2Qk + 1.2W)

Axial Load at GFL = N = 2842 kN

CL. 3.8.1.6.2 l0x = 3.6 - 0.6 = 3.0 m

Columns are considered as unbraced.
End condition at top, both direction - condition 1.
End condition at bottom , both direction - condition 3.
Table 3.20 Hence, β = 1.6
le = βl0
lex = βl0x = 1.6 x 3.0 = 4.8m
ley = βl0x = 1.6 x 3.0 = 4.8 m

CL. 3.8.1.3 lex / h = 4.8 / 0.45 = 10.7 > 10 for unbrazed column

Hence, columns are considered as Slender.

CL. 3.8.1.8 Both ends of the column are restrained. Hence the check,

equation 34 Deflection induced Moments:

au = βa K h

βa = 1/2000 x (le/b’)2

βax = 1/2000 x (4.8/0.4)2 = 0.072

βay = 1/2000 x (4.8/0.4)2 = 0.072

K = Reduction factor that corrects the deflection to allow for the

influence of axial load and can be conservatively taken as 1.

Take K = 1,

Hence, aux = 0.072 x 1 x 450 = 32.4mm

auy =0.072x 1 x450 = 32.4mm
