Unit 2- Sound and Storage
Sound is represented digitally throught the process of Sampling. It is also known as converting an
analogue sound to a digital sound.
Uncompressed formats (Example: WAV,AIFF)
-High quality audio but it takes up more space and result in large file size.
-used for professional
Compressed formats (like MP3 and AAC)
-reduce file quality but reduce file size
-made for casual listening and streaming
Uncompressed formats retains all the original data. It is large and contains abour 16 bits.It
requres more storage space since it is bigger in file size and it is less flexible for sharing because
of the file size.
Compressed formats can be lost is some quality. They are 30% to 60% smaller than
uncompressed files in size. It is fast to transfer and store because of the file size.
HDDs: Used for large storage needs, and slower. Mostly for bulk storage and backups.
SSDs: Offer better speed and durability. Best suited for operating systems and applications that need
fast access.
Cloud Storage: Offers flexible storage that you can access from anywhere. You have to pay based on
how much you use. It’s great for working together with others. But,how fast it works depands on how
good your connection is.
