REPORT WRITING
A report is a brief account of an event that has already taken place. The report helps in
recording the events of importance that occur in our day-to-day life. It attempts to present the
firsthand information of an incident or event. A report of an event presents a record of events
that took place. A report of an event includes one’s ideas, opinions and impressions about the
event.
The way a report is written depends upon two major considerations:
who is going to read it
why is (s)he going to read it
Points to Remember:
Mention the place, date, time and other relevant facts about the event.
Include information collected from the people around or affected by the event.
Write the name of the reporter.
Provide a suitable title/heading.
Write in past tense.
Write in reported speech and use passive form of expression.
Develop ideas (causes, reasons, consequences, opinions) logically.
Write in a less formal and more descriptive manner, while writing a report for a school
magazine.
Present your ideas and impressions to make the report interesting.

14th February, 20xx. A major slum area in Vilas Nagar was gutted by a massive fire on 10th
February, 20xx. The fire whose exact cause is still not very clear caused extensive damage to life
and property. Ten persons lost their lives, many were injured and about two hundred people
were rendered homeless. Our school joined and relief to the victims.
The students of our school got together and collected food packets, old clothes, medicines,
utensils, etc. to be distributed to these homeless and helpless people. Ten students and three
teachers personally visited this slum area to ensure proper and fair distribution of the items that
had been collected and thus provided some relief to these unfortunate people in their time of
crisis and misery.

Gurgaon 16th March, 20xx, Gurgaon: Our school organised a seminar on ‘Water Conservation’
as part of the World Water Day Celebrations on 13th August, 20xx. The main aim of this seminar
was to remind us all about the need to save the government and the non-governmental
organisations in providing help water as it is a precious source imperative for our survival.
Distinguished environmentalists and eminent personalities were our guest speakers and they
reiterated the need not only of conserving water but also spoke at length on how to conserve
water by stressing upon the fact that each drop of water is precious. Dr. Yashraj, an eminent
environmentalist, suggested rain-water harvesting as one of the best ways to conserve water.
Using visual aids to highlight his discourse, he suggested that to ensure availability of water for
the future generations the withdrawal of fresh water from an ecosystem should not exceed its
natural replacement rate. The seminar concluded on the note that water conservation is the
most cost-effective, environmentally sound way to reduce our demand for water and so each
one of us must do our bit towards improving water management to enhance optimum use of
water.

5th June 20XX, Cuttack – Our school, Odisha Senior Secondary School Cuttack celebrated World
Environment Day from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the school campus. The Educational Minister of the
state, Mr. Y.S. Patra, inaugurated the exhibition put up by the SST Dept and students of the
middle school. There were stalls exhibiting various recycled products, waste management
methods, pollution control methods and schemes, awareness through posters, PowerPoint
presentations, and role-plays.
The centre stage on the playground used Preserve Our Environment as a theme for songs,
dances, mimes, and one-act play saplings were generously distributed to encourage tree
plantation at an individual’s level. A debate and recitation competition was held on an inter-
school basis. Our school got the Runners-up Trophy while GKP Public was adjudged the Best All-
Rounder. The celebration came to an end with a vote of thanks by the Headmistress, Sundarilaal
Pathak, and the National Anthem was sung by all of us.

Four Killed as Car Rams Into Bus

Panchkula, 15th July, 20XX : Four people were killed and at least two seriously injured, when a Maruti
800 car rammed into a private bus at Sector 15 round about 2 pm here today. According to preliminary
reports and eyewitness accounts, the driver of the car lost control on his speed and failed to apply the
brakes. The bus was waiting for passengers at the Sector 15 bus stand.
The injured have been rushed to the Government Hospital, Panchkula and further investigations are on.

New Delhi, 15th July 20XX : According to a recent survey conducted by the Indian Dental Association,
75% of the school-going children are plagued by dental problems, especially tooth decay and bleeding
gums. The survey was done to report on the oral hygiene of school students in India.
The survey was held for a period of six months, viz January to June this year in the schools all over
India. As a part of the survey, renowned dentists visited 1,000 schools all over the country and
conducted a thorough check-up of about 1.5 lakh students.
The most astounding finding of the survey was that only about 20% of the children brush their teeth
twice a day. The doctors emphasised on brushing of the teeth and periodical flossing to prevent tooth
decay and cavity.

Climate Change Leading to Diseases: WHO

A news report by the World Health Organization (WHO) says climate change is adversely
affecting the health of millions of people across the world, leading to the death of thousands,
and fuelling diseases like diarrhoea and malaria.
The study released in Milan in Italy last week, estimates that in the year 2000, 150,000 deaths
were caused because of climate change. It says climate change is responsible for 2.4 per cent of
all cases of diarrhoea worldwide, and for 2 per cent of all malaria cases in the world.
