Physics: Laws of Motion

Date: October 30, 2024

Instructor: Prof. Thomas Harris
Course: PHYS101 - Introduction to Physics

Topic: Newton’s Laws of Motion

Detailed Explanation:

1. First Law (Law of Inertia):

o An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion
unless acted upon by an external force.
o Example: A car will continue moving until friction or another force stops it.
2. Second Law (F = ma):
o The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force applied and
inversely proportional to its mass.
o Example: A small car accelerates faster than a large truck when the same force
is applied.
3. Third Law (Action and Reaction):
o For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
o Example: When you push a wall, the wall pushes back with an equal force.
4. Applications:
o These laws are foundational in classical mechanics and are used to describe
the motion of everything from everyday objects to planets.
