CLASS NOTES – INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS
Date: 13/09/2025
Topic: Newton's Laws of Motion
1. First Law (Law of Inertia)
- An object remains at rest or in uniform motion unless acted upon by an
external force.
- Practical Example: A book stays on a table until you push it.
2. Second Law (F = m * a)
- The acceleration of an object depends on its mass and the force applied.
- Example: Pushing a car vs. pushing a bicycle.
3. Third Law (Action and Reaction)
- For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
- Example: Rocket propulsion works by expelling gases downward.
Key Formulas:
- F = m * a
- Weight = m * g (g = 9.8 m/s²)
Summary:
Newton's laws form the basis for understanding classical mechanics and are
essential for engineering, physics, and everyday applications.
Homework:
- Solve exercises 1-5, page 42.
- Prepare a real-life example for each law to present in class.
