Applications

Application for Employment

When applying for a job, you are often required to fill out an application for employment. It is
very important you are honest when filling out an application. Employers typically use the
information provided on applications to screen applicants and decide what applicants they will
call for an interview. From a completed application, an employer can gain insight into an
applicant and their abilities.

Section1 - General Applications

The first section of an application is usually for General Information.
It typically includes these items:
• Your personal information, such as name, address, telephone number, and Social Security
number.
• Whether you are 18 years of age or older.
• Whether you can legally work in the United States.
• Whether you have applied to or been employed by the company or organization in the past.

Section 2 - Type of Employment

The second section tells the employer this information:
• What position the applicant is interested in.
• How the applicant was referred to the company or organization.
• Whether the applicant wants to work full time, part time, or temporarily.
• When the applicant can start working.

Section 3 - Education
In the Education section, you fill out details about your education. In general, the Education
section will include high school, vocational/technical, college, and other.

Section 4 - Special Skills and Qualifications

Under Special Skills and Qualifications, list any interests, activities, honors, and awards that are
related to the job.

For example:
• Being a member of student organization
• Enjoying cooking for a job in food preparation
• Earning an A in a child development course for a job working with children
• Or Winning a Presidential Champions Award for a job in athletics

Section 5 - Work History

Work History Work History asks you to list your work experience and the details of each job. Jobs
should be listed in order, with the most recent job listed first. Most applications will ask for the
three-work history references. In addition, the duties of each job should be clearly described
using action verbs, such as these examples:
• Prepared
• Operated
• Maintained
• Provided
• Managed
In addition to work experience, any volunteer experience that is related to the job should be
listed. Just like work experience, people learn important social and job-specific skills through
volunteering. Volunteering also demonstrates an applicant's interests and civic responsibility.

Section 6 – References
A reference is a person who can speak positively about the applicant and may have worked with
you in the past.
Good references include the following people:
• Teachers
• Counselors
• Supervisors
• Co-workers
• Co-members of organizations
• Clergy
Before using someone as a reference, you must get the person's permission. A reference should
include the person's name, address, telephone number, occupation, and the person's
relationship to the applicant. Be sure to list more than one reference.

Section 7
Acknowledgement By signing the Acknowledgement, you agree to the terms of the application.
Each Acknowledgement is different, but many include these terms:
• The applicant declares that the application has been filled out truthfully. If the applicant has
not done so, the applicant may be disqualified from applying for the job.
• The applicant realizes that the employer may investigate any information filled out in the
application.
• The applicant understands that the application is not a guarantee of employment.

Resumes
A resume is a professional document that highlights your qualifications for employment. Besides
filling out an application for employment, when applying for a job, it is best practice to give an
employer a resume. However, be careful that your application and resume are consistent. Like
applications, employers use resumes to screen applicants. It is also important to be honest on
your resume and keep it updated as you gain qualifications through continued education, work
and volunteer experience, activities, or honors and awards.
A resume also indirectly provides and employer with information about you in terms of these
skills:
• Being organized
• Being concise
• Being accurate
Resume Types
There are three basic types of resumes:
• Chronological
• Functional
• Combination
When you create a resume, you also should be sure to include information that shows proof of
reliability and capability.
There are resume types to suit every situation. For example, an entry-level resume is suitable for
people who are just entering the workforce. It may include these headings:
• Objective
• Education
• Awards received
• Interests and activities
• Work experience
• Volunteer experience
• References
On the other hand, a professional resume is suitable for people who are mid-career
professionals. It may only include the headings education and professional experience.
Functional vs. Chronological Two other types of résumés are functional and chronological. A
functional resume highlights skills that are acquired through work and volunteer experiences and
activities. This type of resume is suitable for people who are just entering the workforce,
changing careers, or re-entering the job market after a long absence. It is also suitable for people
who have a variety of unconnected jobs. In contrast, a chronological résumé highlights work
experience. This type of resume is suitable for people who have work experience that is related
to a job. You should consider your particular situation when you choose your résumé type.

Resume Objective
An objective is an opening statement at the top of a resume. It tells an employer what type of job
an applicant wants. It also states why the person is qualified for the job. In addition, an objective
should be as specific as possible. In other words, if the applicant wants a job in a healthcare
facility, the objective should state this. Furthermore, if the applicant wants a part time or a
temporary job, this should also be included in the objective.

Cover Letter
A cover letter is a document included with your resume to give additional information on your
skills
and

experience.
It also demonstrates your ability to communicate. A cover letter typically includes these four
paragraphs:
• The first paragraph tells why you are writing - to apply for a job. It states the job opening and
how you learned of the job. The first paragraph should also convey your enthusiasm.
• The second paragraph highlights your qualifications. In other words, it emphasizes why you are
the right person for the job.
• The third paragraph expresses your interest in an interview. You may tell the employer when
you will call to follow-up.
• The fourth paragraph thanks the employer.
Emailing a Resume
When emailing a resume, it is important to follow the employer's instructions on submitting a
resume. The employer may request that your resume be formatted in a certain way, and this is
your chance to show that you know how to follow directions.
If the resume format is not specified, a Microsoft Word document or .pdf are the most commonly
accepted formats.
You will also want to make sure that your name is part of your resume's file name. Copy and
paste your cover letter into the body of the email message. In the subject line, put the name of
the position you are applying for. Lastly, be very careful to send the email to the correct email
address.
