Answer all questions.

1 (a) Find the HCF of 18, 24 and 30.

Solution:

18= 2 × 32
24= 23 × 3 [M1]
30 = 2 × 3 × 5

HCF = 2 × 3 =6 [A1]

Common mistakes:
Find LCM = 180

Answer …………………………… [2]

(b) At a bus terminal, Bus A, B and C depart the terminal at 18-minute, 24-minute and
30-minute intervals respectively. Given that the three buses left the bus terminal together
at 0730 h, find the earliest time at which the three buses will leave the bus terminal again
at the same time.

Solution:

LCM = 23 × 32 × 5 =360 mins [M1]

Earliest time = 0730 + 6 h = 1330 h [A1]

Common mistakes:
1) 6 h
2) 1300 h

2 Luke has some two-dollar, five-dollar and ten-dollar notes in his wallet. The number of two-
dollar notes is thrice the number of ten-dollar notes. There are 2 more five-dollar notes than
ten-dollar notes in his wallet.

(a) Given that Luke has x ten-dollar notes in his wallet, write down an expression, in terms of
x, for the number of five-dollar notes he has in his wallet.

Solution:
x+2 [B1]

Answer ……………… five-dollar notes [1]

(b) Luke gave his sister, Lucy, four two-dollar notes for her daily allowance.
(i) Write down an expression, in terms of x, for the number of two-dollar notes Luke
has in his wallet after giving Lucy her daily allowance.

Solution:
3x – 4 [B1]

Answer ……………… two-dollar notes [1]

Luke has $128 left in his wallet after giving Lucy her daily allowance.
(ii) Form an equation, in terms of x to represent the above information and show that it
can be simplified to 21x + 2 = 128. [2]

Solution:
Total amount of money =
10 x + 5( x + 2) + 2(3 x − 4) =128 [M1]
10 x + 5 x + 10 + 6 x − 8 =
128 [M1]
21x + 2 = 128 [AG]

Common mistakes:
1) wrote 21x + 2 instead of the equation
2) wrote 5x + 2 or 6x – 4

(c) Solve the equation in b(ii) to find the value of x.

Solution:
21x + 2 =128
21x = 126
x=6 [B1]

Answer x = ………………………. [1]

squares, calculate the number of white squares in Diagram n.

Solution:
4n – 3 = 37 [M1]
n = 10

(d) The electricity bill has been decreasing steadily over the months and the amount of
electricity used in July is one-third that of January. Do you agree with this statement?
Explain.

Solution:
Disagree.
There are missing information for March, April and May and we will not be able to tell
if the figures in these months are higher or lower than the previous month. [B1]

Must include key words: March, April and May information not given.

AND

Disagree.

used to paint an area of 1000 cm2. It is estimated that 4 bottles will be needed to paint the
container. Show your working clearly and explain whether this estimation was
correct/wrong.

Solution:
1408π
No. of bottles = = 4.423 [M1]
1000
The estimation was wrong because it would need 5 bottles. [A1]
Working must include using the answer in (a)(i).

out every minute. [B1]

(d) Explain why this graph will not be an accurate model for calculations for values of x > 20 .

Solution:
Volume of water cannot be negative, therefore, the graph will be invalid for values of
x > 20. [B1]
