CHAPTER I
Introduction

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It
includes the background of the study, the conceptual framework to
present variables, researcher’s assumption, the statement of the
problem, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study
and the terms and definition used in the study.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Parental participation in a child’s education is widely seen as an

essential determinant of their academic performance. Several

Investigation have examined the relationship between Parental

Involvement and Student Achievement, consistently highlighting its

positive influence on the child’s educational outcomes. Research has

documented that children’s school performance is influenced by

parent involvement through cognitive competence perception and

student teacher relationship quality as mediators.

Studies from various countries such as Chile have emphasized the

importance of parental involvement in promoting children’s academic

achievement. This means there must be more localized researches

which will be able to provide scientific basis for individual cultural

settings and learning situations.

Understanding how students perceive parental involvement is critical

in developing effective strategies for enhancing parental engagement

and support

Figure 1: It shows how parental involvement is considered by the

researchers as a variable and is connected to the perception of the
student towards their academic achievement of the students.

The conceptual framework for this research is based on the premise

that parental involvement in a child's academic activities can

influence their academic achievement.

The students' perception of this involvement acts as a mediator in

this relationship. If students perceive their parents' involvement as

supportive, it could lead to better academic outcomes.

Conversely, if students perceive this involvement as intrusive or

controlling, it could influence their academic achievement. This

framework provides a basis for exploring the dynamics between

parental involvement, students' perception, and academic

achievement.

In the conceptual framework you can see that parental involvement

is not directly related to Academic Achievement, but the perception

of the student based on these the title the researcher presented

variables which are not independent or dependent to one another

hence it was just as connected to create the said study.

ASSUMPTION

The students may have different interpretations than the assumed

perception of researchers towards parental involvement, ranging from

direct academic assistance to emotional support, and these

perceptions may shape their attitudes and motivation towards their

academic pursuits. The researcher assumed that one of the key

elements here is the mediating role of students' perception of parental

involvement. This perception can either enhance or diminish the

impact of parental involvement on academic achievement.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The issue of parental involvement in students' academic achievement

is a critical area of concern that requires a deeper understanding.

Despite the existing literature on parental involvement, there is a

need to explore the specific perceptions of students regarding the role

of parental support in their academic endeavors.

Major Problem:

This study seeks to address this gap by understanding the students'

perceptions of parental involvement on their academic achievement,

motivation, and overall engagement in education.

Specific Problems:

This research aims to answer the following:

● What are the students' perceptions of the role of parental

support in overcoming academic challenges, such as learning
difficulties or lack of resources?

● What is students’ perception towards their parents’ expectations

towards academic pressure in their academic achievement?

● When and where do they intensely experience the parent’s

support?

● How do students recognize the level of support and

encouragement they receive from their parents in relation to
their academic pursuits?

● Why do they believe it influences their motivation and overall

academic achievement?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The findings of this literature review have practical implications for

various stakeholders involved in education. This section discusses how

the research can benefit different groups and contribute to improving

parental involvement and student academic achievement.

Dr. Jose P. Rizal Senior High School. The study's results can serve as a

valuable reference for future grade 11 students, aiding them in the

development of their qualitative research skills. By examining the

methodologies and outcomes of this study, these students can gain

insights into effective research practices, enhancing the quality of

their own research projects.

Non-Teaching School Administrators. This will enable real-time

supervision and evaluation of pupils’ progress resulting into maximum

performance. This is key given that students are sponsored by the

government for education expenses.

School Policy Makers: This study serves as a valuable resource for

shaping educational policies that promote and support parental

involvement in schools. The insights garnered from this research can

inform the development of initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration

between schools and parents, ultimately contributing to improved

academic outcomes for students on a broader scale.

Teachers. This report can help them realize effective teaching

strategies and approaches which are discussed in findings section

Parents. The study's findings can provide parents with a wealth of

information about effective teaching and learning practices. Armed

with this knowledge, parents can better support their children's

education and collaborate effectively with teachers and school

administrators, fostering a more productive learning environment.

Students. The study’s results could be used to develop teaching

methods that help students enhance their performance and achieve

their maximum potential. Understanding the findings and learning

about study techniques can support students in improving their

learning outcomes.

Future Researchers: Future researchers will find value in the study's

contribution to the existing body of knowledge on parental

involvement and its impact on academic achievement. It can serve as

a foundation for further exploration and analysis, providing a platform

for continued research in this vital area of educational psychology and

family dynamics.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research focuses on understanding student’s perception on

parental involvement and its impact on their academic achievement.

It covers various aspects including students' perception, forms of

parental involvement, impact on academic achievement, and factors

influencing involvement.

The research is conducted at this geographical location of the

school, Dr. Jose P. Rizal Senior High School with School ID 342300, at

this address Brgy. Sto. Cristo, DBB1, City of Dasmariñas, Cavite.

The participants are from Dr. Jose P. Rizal Senior High School in

the specific strand of Technology Vocational Livelihood (TVL) with

specific track of Computer Systems Servicing (CSS) taking their Basic

Education in Grade 11 of School Year 2023-2024.

The maximum population size for the interview is computed

using Sloven’s Formula. To get the intended number with 5% marginal

error. This can be computed using raosoft.com. The formula is shown

below:

n = sample size.
N = total recognized population
