COMPETITIVENESS IN THE EU
Assignment 5
According to this video, one of the biggest issues I find is the inequality among EU countries.
There are some richer countries like Germany and France which are doing well, but at the
same time there are others like Greece and Italy that are struggling with debt and
unemployment. As the video mentions, these differences can cause tensions and make it
hard for the EU to come up with policies that work for everyone.
Another problem the EU is facing is about the UK and the Brexit. This country deciding to
leave the EU wasn’t something good for the continent, not only because of the economic
impact but also because the EU lost one of its key members. As the video mentions, this
created uncertainty and doubts about the EU’s future.
Furthermore, immigration is another challenge for the EU. The fact that the EU has open
boarders is good because it means that people can move around freely, but this also brings
consequences. The video explains how the influx of migrants and refugees has limited the
resources available and given rise to debates among EU countries to find the way to handle
it all.
Finally, another issue here is the EU’s structure itself. By watching the video we can clearly
understand how it often takes a long time to make decisions because of the many layers of
bureaucracy the EU has to go through. This is a problem because it makes it difficult to act
quickly when it’s needed, specially in times of crisis.
So, in conclusion, we can see problems in terms of inequality, the Brexit fallout, immigration
and sometimes a too slowed decision-making process, which is all a work in progress for the
European Union.
