Instructions:

 Complete the assignment individually.

 You have 75 minutes to complete all questions.
 Show your work clearly, including all formulas and calculations.

1. A uniform magnetic field with a magnitude of 1.2×10−3 T points vertically upward through a laboratory
chamber. A proton with a velocity of 3.2×107 m/s enters the chamber moving horizontally from south to north.
(a) What is the magnitude of the magnetic force on the proton?

(b) What is the direction of the magnetic force on the proton?

2. An electron moves with a speed of 6.9×103 m/s in a direction perpendicular to a magnetic field directed south
to north and of strength 1.3×10−2 T. What are the magnitude and direction of the force on the electron if the
electron is moving from east to west?

3. A 36.0 m length of electrical wire carries a current of 22.0 A from a transformer to a building in a west-to-east
direction. The magnetic field of Earth at the transformer location is horizontal and directed from south to north
with a magnitude of 5.00×10−5 T. Determine the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on the wire.
4. An electron, after being accelerated through a potential difference of 100.0 V, enters a uniform magnetic field
of 0.0400 T perpendicular to its direction of motion. Calculate the radius of the path described by the electron.

5. A velocity selector is a device that can choose the velocity of a charged particle moving through a region where
the electric field is perpendicular to the magnetic field, and both fields are perpendicular to the particle's initial
velocity. To make the charged particle travel straight through the parallel plates, the downward deflection due
to the electric field must equal the upward deflection due to the magnetic field. Magnetic field, B=0.050 T. The
velocity selector allows protons with a speed of 5.0×102 m/s to pass through undeflected.
(a) Calculate the electric field required for the velocity selector.

(b) What is the radius of the path the proton takes to get to point PPP? (mass of the proton is 1.67 x 10-7 kg.)
