TOPIC: HOW DO ORGANISMS REPRODUCE?
1. Study the given diagram and answer:
a) List two reasons for the appearance of variations among the progeny
formed by sexual reproduction.
1) Sexual reproduction causes variation in appearance in progeny because
it involves the DNA of both parents
2) During the process of DNA copying, the biological process cannot be
truly accurate so, the process of DNA copying leads to some variation.
3) Recombination of genes from two different parents occur
(Any two)
b) i) Name the part marked ‘A’ in the diagram alongside.
Part A is pollen grains
ii) How does ‘A’ reach part ‘B’?
'A' reaches to 'B' by the process of pollination 'B' is the stigma
iii)State the importance of the part ‘C’.
Part C is a pollen tube. Through this tube, male gamete reaches the egg / ovule.
iv) What happens to the part marked ‘D’?
'D' is egg / ovule. After fertilization it divides several times and form an embryo.
2. In a bisexual flower, inspite of young stamens being removed artificially, the
flower produces fruit. Provide a suitable explanation for the same.
Because the pistil / gynoecium or the female reproductive part is intact. So, by the
process of cross fertilization, fruit can be formed.
3. (a) List three different categories of contraceptive methods.
(b)Why has Government of India prohibited prenatal sex determination by
law? State its benefits in the long run.
(c) Unsafe sexual act can lead to various infections. Name two bacterial and two
viral infections caused due to unsafe sex.
(a) Three different categories of contraceptive methods are :
(i) Barrier methods, i.e., use of condoms, etc.
(ii)Chemical methods, i.e., use of oral pills or vaginal pills.
(iii)Surgical methods, i.e., vasectomy and tubectomy.
(b) Prenatal sex determination was banned in India to prevent sex selective
abortion. It is being used to kill the normal female foetus. This killing of the unborn
girl child is called female foeticide which is reducing the number of girls drastically
in some parts of our country. Due to reckless female foeticide, male-female sex
ratio is declining at an alarming rate. Its benefit in the long run is that the female-
male ratio could be maintained for a healthy society.
(c) Bacterial diseases due to unsafe sex are gonorrhoea,
syphilis. Viral diseases due to unsafe sex are AIDS,
genital herpes.
4. Based on the given diagram answer the questions given below:
(a) Label the parts A, B, C and D.
(b) Name the hormone secreted by testis and mention its role.
(c) State the functions of B and C in the process of reproduction.
(a) A – Ureter
B – Seminal
vesicle C –
Urethra
D – Vas deferens
(b) Testes produce male sex hormone testosterone. Hormone testosterone brings
about the development of secondary sexual characters during puberty in boys
like growth of facial hair, deepening of voice and also regulates formation of
sperms.
(c) Seminal vesicles (B) produces secretion that is added to the sperms giving
them a fluid medium that makes their transport easier and this fluid also
provides nutrition to the sperms. Through urethra (C) sperms(semen) are
ejaculated outside(female genital tract) .
5. (a) Draw a diagram of the human female reproductive system and label the part
(i) that produces eggs.
(ii)where the fusion of egg and sperm takes place.
(iii)where zygote is implanted.
(b)What happens to the egg when it is not fertilised?
(a) Human female reproductive system:
(i) the part that produces eggs – Ovary
(ii)where the fusion of egg and sperm takes place – Fallopian tube
(iii)where the zygote is implanted – Uterus
(b) If the egg is not fertilised, it lives for about one day. After that, since the
thick and spongy lining of the uterus is not needed, the lining slowly breaks down
and comes out through vagina as blood and mucous. This cycle takes place
roughly every month and is known as menstruation. It usually lasts for about two
to eight days.
