ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I express my sense of gratitude to Mr. Deepak Verma , Lecturer
in Physics, WISDOM WORLD SCHOOL, KURUKSHETRA for her
inspiration, valuable guidance and constant encouragement in completion
of this project. Without her it would have been an impossible task for me.
I have put my sincere effort to make this project interesting. I have fully
consulted all the available books on this subject and I am thankful to
esteemed authors.

PROJECT
OBJECTIVE
To demonstrate the phenomenon of mutual inductance.
MATERIAL REQUIRED
Two coils of thick, insulated copper wires, a battery one way key, a
sensitive galvanometer, an iron rod which can be easily inserted in to the
coils.
PRINCIPLE
Mutual inductance is the phenomenon due to which, in a pair of two
neighbouring coils, an induced emf is set up in coil when current flowing
through the neighbouring coil changes (i.e., either increases or decrease
dl
with time). If dt1 be the rate of change of current in one coil then the
magnitude of induced emf in the second (neighbouring) coil is given by
d I1
|ε 2|=M 12 dt
Where M 12 is known as the mutual inductance of second coil with
respect to first coil.
Thus, mutual inductance of two neighboring coils is numerically
equal to the induced emf produced in one oil when current flowing in the
neighbourig coil changes at a rate of 1 ampere per second.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
PROCEDURE
1. Prepare two coils C1 and C2 following the procedure explained in
demonstration experiment 7.
2. Using two iron stands hold the coils C1 and C2 stationary, such
that their axes are along the same line and the two coils are very
close to each other.
3. As shown is figure, connect the coil C 1 to a sensitive
galvanometer G. Also connect the second coil C2 to a battery
though a tapping key K.
4. Gently press the key K. The galvanometer shows a momentary
deflection. If you continue to press the key K, the pointer in the
galvanometer returns to zero immediately.
5. Release the key K. Again a momentary deflection is observed
but in the opposite direction.
6. Introduce an iron rod into the coils along their common axis and
repeat steps 4 an 5. Now deflection obtained in galvanometer is
extremely large.
CONCLUSION
1. The phenomenon of mutual inductance has been demonstrated.
2. The induced emf/current due to mutual inductance increases
manifold when a (ferromagnetic) iron rod is inserted into the
coils.
