Synchronous Motor PFC Practice Problems

1. An industrial area has a load of 4000 kVA at a lagging PF of 0.6. An 800
HP synchronous motor having an efficiency of 88% is added to supply rated
motor load but primarily to improve the overall PF to 0.9 lagging.
Determine:
a) The PF at which the synchronous motor operates.
b) The kVA rating of the synchronous motor.
c) The maximum useful horsepower output of the synchronous motor in part
b if it was operated to drive a load at unity PF, assume same efficiency.

2. A factory has an average total electric load of 7850 kW at 0.793 lagging.

Part of the load is a 1200 HP AC motor driving a compressor. This motor
has a loaded pf of 0.831 lagging. That motor is replaced with a synchronous
motor that will run at the same 92.5 % efficiency and 0.80 pf leading.
Determine:

a. Original factor totals of S and Q (with induction motor).

b. Original induction motor input of P, S and Q.
c. Synchronous motor input kW, kVa and kvar.
d. Factory total kW, kVA and kvar with the synchronous motor.
e. Factory pf with the synchronous motor.

3. A radial power system operates at a voltage of 480 V. Three loads are

connected in parallel. Load 1 is an induction motor consuming 100 kW at
0.78 pf lagging. Load 2 is an induction motor consuming 200 kW at 0.8 pf
lagging. Load 3 is a synchronous motor with a real power consumption of
150 kW.
a. If the synchronous motor is adjusted to operate at 0.85 pf lagging, what is
the total input current to this radial system from the supply?
b. If the synchronous motor is adjusted to operate at 0.85 pf leading, what is
the total input current to this radial system from the supply?
