Introduction to Percent
There are 100 cents in a dollar. There are 100 years in a century. This gives us a clue about the meaning
of the word percent. If we split the word percent into two words, per cent, we can see that it means per
one hundred. A percent is a fraction with a denominator of 100, and we use the percent symbol, %, to
show percent.
For example, if a survey found 89% of students use a smartphone, that means 89 students out off 100

Convert a Percent to a Fraction
Step 1: Write the percent as a fraction with denominator of 100.
Step 2: Simplify the fraction if possible.
Example 1. Convert 36% to a fraction.

Convert a Percent to a Decimal
Step 1: Write the percent as a fraction with denominator of 100.
Step 2: Convert the fraction to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
Example 2. Convert 6% to a decimal.

Divide the numerator by the denominator. 6 ÷ 100
Simplify. 0.06
Notice that when we convert a percent to a decimal, we move the decimal two places to the left and
remove the %. This is the same as dividing by 100%.

Convert a Decimal to a Percent
Step 1: Write the decimal as a fraction.
Step 2: If the denominator of the fraction is not 100, rewrite as an equivalent fraction with
denominator of 100.
Step 3: Write as a percent.
Example 3. Convert 0.2 to a percent.

Notice that when we convert a decimal to a percent, we move the decimal two places to the right and
we add the %. This is the same as multiplying by 100%.
Convert a Fraction to a Percent
Step 1: Convert the fraction to a decimal.
Step 2: Convert the decimal to a percent.

Example 4. Convert to a percent.

Change to a decimal. 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
Multiply by 100%. This is the same as moving
the decimal two spots to the right and adding 0.75 ⋅ 100%
the percent symbol.
