Design Thinking and Idea Lab
Assignment No.1
Problem Identification and Initial Ideas
Objective: Understand the problem space and generate initial ideas through design thinking
Guidelines to complete the assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is to guide you through the initial stages of the design thinking process,
including problem identification, idea generation, prototyping, and testing. You will develop a clear
understanding of a real-world problem, propose potential solutions, and validate those solutions
through early testing.
• Empathy First: Begin by putting yourself in the users' shoes. Understand their needs, challenges,
and goals through research and empathy-building exercises.
• Problem Definition: Clearly define the problem based on the insights gained during the empathy
phase. Your problem statement should be specific, actionable, and user-centered.
• Creative Ideation: Use various brainstorming techniques to generate a broad range of ideas.
Focus on quantity first, then refine and prioritize your ideas based on feasibility and impact.
• Prototyping: Create simple, low-fidelity prototypes of your top ideas to explore their potential.
Focus on quickly building and iterating on your ideas.
• Testing: Conduct early tests of your prototypes with potential users or peers. Gather feedback to
understand the strengths and weaknesses of your ideas.
Initial Problem Statement:
A. Empathy:
Gain a deep understanding of the users' needs, challenges, and desires.
Task:
• Create a User Persona

Interests:
• Develop an Empathy Map
Review the details of the persona you've created, including their goals, challenges, and motivations.
Keep the persona's background and context in mind throughout the empathy mapping process.
• Says: Imagine what your persona might say about their experiences, challenges, or needs. Use
quotes or phrases that represent their voice.
• Thinks: Consider what your persona is thinking. What worries them? What are their hopes?
Capture their internal thoughts, even if they don’t express them.
• Does: Describe the actions and behaviors your persona typically exhibits. How do they interact
with their environment? What steps do they take to solve their problems?
2
Design Thinking and Idea Lab
• Feels: Identify the emotions your persona experiences. What frustrates them? What excites or
motivates them?
Note:
• Work in groups and gather around an A2-sized sheet of paper. Divide the sheet into four sections:
Says, Thinks, Does, and Feels. Use sticky notes of different colors for each section to keep things
organized.
• Write down the main insights from each section (Says, Thinks, Does, Feels) in a structured format.

B. Define:

C. Ideate
In the ideation stage, start by understanding the problem through a review of your empathy map,
persona, and problem statement. Engage in free brainstorming, where all ideas are encouraged
without judgment, aiming for a high volume of ideas. Once you have a variety of ideas, evaluate
them by clustering similar concepts and selecting the best ones based on feasibility and potential
impact. Use sketches or diagrams to visualize these ideas, making them clearer and more tangible.
Collaborate with your group to refine and iterate on the ideas, combining or modifying them as
needed. To finalize the idea, use a point voting system where each group member allocates points to
their preferred ideas, helping to identify the most favored solutions. Document all ideas generated,
and summarize the top selections with supporting visuals. Finally, prepare to move forward by
choosing which ideas will be developed into prototypes, ensuring you remain creative, user-focused,
and open-minded throughout the process.
Activity:
The Crazy 8s activity is a quick brainstorming exercise where participants have 8 minutes to sketch
8 different ideas on a sheet of paper divided into 8 sections. The focus is on speed and quantity,
encouraging creative, outside-the-box thinking. Afterward, participants share and discuss their ideas
with the group. Sketch 8 different ideas in following table

All students should discuss their ideas with group members and after discussion short list at
5-6 best ideas.
Point Voting to Finalize an Idea
• Each participant has 3 points that they can distribute among the idea.
• Participants can allocate all their points to one idea or spread them across multiple ideas.
• Each participant places their points next to the idea(s) they prefer. This can be done using sticky
dots, markers.
• Encourage participants to think critically about how they allocate their points.
• Tally the points for each idea to see which one(s) received the most support.
• The idea with the highest total points is typically considered the group's final choice.
Final Idea :
Six Hats analysis
The Six Hats analysis, also known as the Six Thinking Hats, is a decision-making and problem-
solving technique created by Edward de Bono. This method encourages a group or individual to
approach a problem or idea from multiple perspectives, each represented by a different "hat." Each
hat represents a distinct style of thinking, helping to ensure a well-rounded and thorough evaluation

of the subject. Do six Hats Analysis of selected idea.
1. White Hat (Facts)-List key facts and data, Identify missing information of your idea.
2. Red Hat (Feelings)- Capture emotional reactions and intuitions about final idea.
3. Black Hat (Risks)- Identify risks, downsides, and potential failures of final idea

4. Yellow Hat (Benefits)- Highlight potential benefits and positive outcomes of final idea.
5. Green Hat (Ideas)- Brainstorm creative solutions and alternatives.
6. Blue Hat (Process)- Outline the plan, roles, and next steps.

D. Prototype
Prototyping is essential because it transforms ideas into tangible models, allowing for early testing
and feedback. This process helps identify and fix issues early, saving time and resources. Prototypes
improve communication within teams and with stakeholders, fostering collaboration and innovation.
They also reduce risks by validating assumptions and guiding the final design, ensuring the end
product meets user needs and project goals. At the initial stage of prototyping, it's common to use
charts, diagrams, sketches, and outlines to visually represent ideas.

E. Testing:
At the initial stage, it's important to share your prototype with other groups and gather their feedback.
This process helps you gain fresh perspectives, identify potential issues, and refine your idea before
further development.

Objective: Refine initial ideas into viable solutions, emphasizing user feedback and iteration
Revisit the empathy maps, user personas, and insights gathered in the first assignment. Update any
findings or insights based on feedback and further reflection. Next, refine the problem statement to
be more specific and focused, crafting a clear and concise Point of View (POV) statement that reflects
the refined problem and incorporates user feedback. Repeat all 5 steps of design thinking i.e.

Start with the main topic in the center, then draw branches for major categories related to the topic.
Add sub-branches for more specific ideas under each theme. Use keywords or short phrases, not full
sentences. Include simple drawings and use colors to differentiate branches. Arrange branches in a
clear, logical order. Adjust and add to the map as new ideas emerge. Finally, review the mind map
to ensure it is complete and coherent. This approach helps you organize and visually explore your
ideas effectively.
