INTERNET USAGE IN VILLAGE

ABSTRACT

This project is about the rapid growth of internet in rural India and its impact in rural
areas. Internet connectivity would allow rural Indians the opportunity to achieve the economic
status. Rural India is enthusiastically joining the mobile telephony platform with a 448.90 million
wireless/mobile phone users. Every month, an average of 0.24% increase in new customers is
seen in rural India .It is a clear indication that wireless/mobile telephony has bridged an important
gap in the digital divide; rural India is willingly and quickly adapting to the mobile telephony
technology. our survey among rural people was conducted with the aim to understand, how much
internet connectivity has reached these areas. The study also assesses the type of devices used to
access internet and usage pattern. Key indicators such as hours of usage and money spent were
are explored. Other aspects such as network provider, and what information they access was also
studied.

This project focuses on making awareness of using the internet by acknowledging the
advantages and disadvantages to the people of the village. Also recommending few suggestions
for the good usage of Internet. Instructing the young students of the villages not to stuck in the
time waste content and impropriate content in the internet. Finally this project let us to understand
the difference observed by people of the village before and after the internet access came into
their lives.

INTERNET USAGE IN VILLAGE

CHAPTER - 1.EXCEUTIVE SUMMARY

Your village Community Projects is formed to provide a place where people of all ages and
abilities are encouraged to develop their full potential through education and extra activities.
Thapelo Community Projects plans to offer dynamic, unique and constantly evolving
programs. The purpose of this plan is to attain grant funding in order to develop a community
centre to house programs that are geared towards revitalizing the community. The types of
programs to be included Computer Training Classes, Life Skills and Coaching, Customer Care
Training, Learnership programmes and Internships, Entrepreneurship,Financial Management
and Business Management Skills.

1.1.Internet History

The Internet started in the 1960s as a way for government researchers to share information.
Computers in the '60s were large and immobile and in order to make use of information stored
in any one computer, one had to either travel to the site of the computer or have magnetic
computer tapes sent through the conventional postal system.

Another catalyst in the formation of the Internet was the heating up of the Cold War. The
Soviet Union's launch of the Sputnik satellite spurred the U.S. Defense Department to consider
ways information could still be disseminated even after a nuclear attack. This eventually led to
the formation of the

ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), the network that ultimately
evolved into what we now know as the Internet. ARPANET was a great success but membership
was limited to certain academic and research organizations who had contracts with the Defense
Department. In response to this, other networks were created to provide information
sharing.January 1, 1983 is considered the official birthday of the Internet. Prior to this, the various
computer networks did not have a standard way to communicate with each other. A new
communications protocol was established called Transfer Control Protocol/Internetwork
Protocol (TCP/IP). This allowed different kinds of computers on different networks to "talk" to
each other. ARPANET and the Defense Data Network officially changed to the TCP/IP standard

7

on January 1, 1983, hence the birth of the Internet. All networks could now be connected by a
universal language.

The image above is a scale model of the UNIVAC I (the name stood for Universal Automatic
Computer) which was delivered to the Census Bureau in 1951. It weighed some 16,000 pounds,
used 5,000 vacuum tubes, and could perform about 1,000 calculations per second. It was the first
American commercial computer, as well as the first computer designed for business use.
(Business computers like the UNIVAC processed data more slowly than the IAS-type machines,
but were designed for fast input and output.) The first few sales were to government agencies,
the A.C. Nielsen Company, and the Prudential Insurance Company. The first UNIVAC for
business applications was installed at the General Electric Appliance Division, to do payroll, in
1954. By 1957 Remington-Rand (which had purchased the Eckert-Mauchly Computer
Corporation in 1950) had sold forty-six machines.

1.2.Types of internet

1.Dialup connection : It is an old way of connecting to the internet. Dialup connection uses a
phone line and is very slow. You can either make a call on the phone or connect to the internet.
The connection time is high in dialup connection. The internet speed is also very slow. You
cannot do video/audio chat on this type of connection. Also downloading any file is very slow.
Nowadays this type of connection is not used.

2.Leased line : Leased line is a dedicated phone line used to connect to the internet. A leased
line is used by big organizations. Some universities still use a leased line for making a connection
to the internet.

8
INTERNET USAGE IN VILLAGE

3.ISDN (Integrated service digital network) : In this type of internet you can connect a
computer, fax machine or telephone line to single ISDN. ISDN uses a modem to connect different
devices. ISDN is costly than Dialup connection. You can transfer video, audio, and other data at
the same time i.e. you can make a phone call from your telephone and also can use the internet
at the same time.

4.DSL (Digital subscriber line) : DSL uses the modem for making an internet connection. It is
10 times faster than a dialup connection. Also, the voice quality of telephone is not affected when
you use the internet at the same time.

5.ADSL (Asymmetric digital subscriber line) : It is mostly used type of DSL and in this type
of connection, download internet speed is high than upload internet speed. Mostly you use the
internet for downloading data. And we upload files less.

6.SDSL (Symmetric digital subscriber line) : This is also a type of DSL but it has almost same
download and upload speed.

7.Cable modem : In this type of network you can connect modem with TV cable and internet.

8.Wireless or Wi-Fi : Wireless connection is the most common type of internet connection by
which you can connect laptops, smartphone, and other digital devices with the internet. The
internet speed of Wi-Fi ranges from 5Mbps to 20 Mbps. Wi-Fi uses radio frequency to transfer
data.

9.Broadband : This is a very high-speed internet with a transfer rate of 100Mbps. The internet
speed depends upon the cables i.e. coaxial cable or fiber optics. Coaxial cables loss some data
during transferring data.

10.Satellite : In this type of internet you can make a connection with the satellite but it has low
internet speed i.e. 513 kbps to 2Mbps

11.Cellular : This type of internet connection is given by mobile companies to its users. The
cellular connection uses 3G (3rd generation) and 4G (4th generation) technologies. 3G gives
around 2Mbps speed while 4G gives speed up to 21Mbps

9
INTERNET USAGE IN VILLAGE

1.3.Types of internet Users

The Geek
If you can name every Star Wars character or if you know what Wi-Fi 6 is, you may be an
internet Geek. But, that’s not a bad thing. The internet Geek knows their way around technology
and are an expert in using the internet. For all the Geeks out there, we recommend having 1 Gig
speeds, but you already knew that, didn’t you.

The Social Butterfiy

Do you like to surf the web or talk to your friends and family on Social Media? You may be
a Social Butterfly. Social Butterflies know the latest in celebrity gossip and have mastered
creating the perfect TikTok dance. They are novice internet users and like to use their internet
for the basics, such as social media, sending emails and shopping online. For all the Social
Butterflies, we recommend having 100 Mbps for streamlined internet use.

The Entertainment Buff

You may be an Entertainment Buff if you always have a fresh bowl of popcorn on hand and love to
watch the latest movie releases from the comfort of your home. The Entertainment Buff always has more
than one device streaming their favorite TV entertainment, and snacks are never too far away. They are
an intermediate nternet user and know enough about technology to be comfortable with it. For this user,
we recommend 500 Mbps for all your streaming entertainment

The Worker or Learner

Is the internet your lifeline to work and school online? Do you consider yourself a Zoom call
expert and know how to turn the cat filter off and on? The Worker and Learner are continually
using their internet connection to upload and download documents, email, and stream calls. They
are an intermediate internet user and know a little more than your average user. For all Workers
or Learners, we recommend 200 Mbps for all your needs

1.4.Internet and Youth People

Since the internet and other media have been adopted and integrated into the daily lives of an
increasing number of young adolescents in Western countries, scholars and commentators are
debating the impact of these new media on the activities, social relationships, and worldviews of
the younger generations. Controversies about whether technology shapes values, attitudes, and
patterns of social behavior are not new. In the recent past, the rapid expansion of television

10
INTERNET USAGE IN VILLAGE

stimulated similar discussions of its cultural and social effects. In this essay, I will briefly
describe the sources of the debate and its specific arguments regarding the role of the internet in
youth life. Then, I will describe some important trends in youth activities, attitudes, and
behaviors.

The literature on the internet and youth culture presents different views regarding the role of
technology in society. Two major perspectives are technological determinism and the social
construction of technologies.

1.5.Internet - Advantages

The internet is perhaps one of the best inventions thus far. As anyone can access the
computer this made people by stripping away geographical barriers and sharing information
instantaneously.

1.Communication Forum: The speed of communication becomes faster which is obtained

through the web. Families and friends can confine touch easily. The platform for products like
SKYPE allows for holding a video conference with anyone within the world who also has
access.

2.Abundant Information: Anyone can find information on almost any imaginable subject.
Plenty of resources are often found through the program in minutes.

3.Inexhaustible Education: For instance, students can gain readily available help for his or
her homework online.

4.Entertainment for everybody: Most folks love using our laptops, smartphones, and, tablets.
The web is the big reason behind us spending such a lot of time on these gadgets.

5.Online Services and E-commerce: Many services of emails, online banking, online
shopping, etc are there. Free mail to anyone is definitely accessible all around the world. E-
commerce enables one in America to shop for things in Asia, Africa, or other areas within the
world through some simple clicks of the mouse

11
INTERNET USAGE IN VILLAGE

6.Social network: Social networking is the sharing of data with people across the planet. Aside
from being an entertainment website, it’s many uses.

7.Learning: The web has now become a neighborhood of education. Education like
homeschooling is definitely administered using the web. Teachers can upload their teaching
videos on the web

1.6.Internet – Disadvantages

The Internet’s drawbacks can’t be overlooked any longer as numerous teenagers are affected
by Internet Addiction Disorder, then many ladies became online shopaholics.

1.Internet Addiction Disorder: Internet addiction is detrimental to not only fitness but also
psychological state.

2.Cyber Crime: Hacker programs a virus that gets into the pc and ruins valuable data. Users’
personal information like name, address, master card, bank details, and other information are
often accessed by culprits when used on the web, leading to significant economic loss.

3.Social Alienation: Time spent online flies fast without consciousness. After getting attracted
the user is trapped into the trap, users are trapped by a “net”, spending less time with people in
the real world. Less interaction and face-to-face communication, actually, may end in a
decrease in social abilities.

4.Spam: The unnecessary emails, advertisements, etc. are sometimes said to be spam because
they need the power to hamper the system and make the users face many problems.

5.Health issues: Playing games and spending too much time on monitors leads to obesity and an
unhealthy lifestyle.
