LINEAR EQUATION IN 2 VARIABLES

Class 10 - Mathematics
Time Allowed: 1 hour and 30 minutes Maximum Marks: 50

1. Draw the graphs of the lines x = –2 and y = 3. Write the vertices of the figure formed by these lines, the x-axis [2]
and the y-axis. Also, find the area of the figure.
2. Two rails are represented by the equations: x + 2y – 4 = 0 and 2x + 4y – 12 = 0. Will the rails cross each other? [2]
3. 37 pens and 53 pencils together cost Rs 955, while 53 pens and 37 pencils together cost Rs 1115. Find the cost of [2]
a pen and that of a pencil.
4. Aftab tells his daughter, “Seven years ago, I was seven times as old as you were then. Also, three years from [2]
now, I shall be three times as old as you will be.” (Isn’t this interesting?) Represent this situation algebraically
by the method of substitution.
5. Find the value of k, if x = 2, y = 1 is a solution of the equation 2x + 3y = k . [2]
6. By using elimination method find all possible solutions of the pair of linear equations given below: [2]
2x + 3y = 8 .... (i)
4x + 6y = 7 .... (ii)
7. Does the pair of the linear equation have no solution? Justify your answer. [2]
x = 2y, y = 2x
8. By the graphical method, find whether the pair of equation is consistent or not. If consistent, solve it. [2]
x – 2y = 6, 3x – 6y = 0
9. Ratio between the girls and boys in a class of 40 students is 2:3. Five new students joined the class. How many [2]
of them must be boys so that the ratio between girls and boys becomes 4: 5?
10. Solve the pair of linear equations by substitution method: 7x – 15y = 2 and x + 2y = 3 [2]
11. Graph the following pairs of equations. State whether the equations are consistent, inconsistent or dependent. x + [3]
2y = 3; 2x + 4y = 8
12. Draw the Graphs of the equations x = 3, x = 5 and 2x - y - 4 = 0. Also find the area of the quadrilateral formed [3]
by the lines and the x-axis.
13. Determine by drawing graphs, whether the following pair of linear equations has a unique solution or not: 3x + [3]
4y = 12; y = 2.
14. Solve system of equations: [3]
– –
√2x − √3y = 0

– –
√3x − √8y = 0

15. A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train had been 5 kmph faster, it would have taken 3 [3]
hours less than the scheduled time. And, if the train were slower by 4 kmph, it would have taken 3 hours more
than the scheduled time. Find the length of the journey.
16. Solve the system of equations: [3]
x-y+z=4

17. Solve graphically 2x - 3y + 13 = 0 and 3x - 2y + 12 = 0. [3]
18. Father's age is three times the sum of ages of his two children. After 5 years, his age will be twice the sum of [3]
ages of two children. Find the age of father.
19. Seven times a two digit number is equal to four times the number obtained by reversing the order of its digits. If [3]
the difference between the digits is 3, determine the number.
20. Solve the system of equations by using the method of substitution: [3]
