Introduction to Turning Process :
Turning is one of the oldest and most common of metal-
cutting operations. In turning, a work piece is rotated about its axis as
single- point cutting tools are fed into it, shearing away unwanted
material and creating the desired part.
The two basic requirements for turning are a means of holding
the work while it rotates and a means of holding cutting tools and
moving them to the work. Turning can be performed on both external
and internal surfaces to produce an axially symmetrical contoured
part.
The general-purpose engine lathe is the most basic turning
machine tool. The capacity of a lathe is expressed in two dimensions.
The maximum part diameter, or “swing”, and the maximum part
length, or “Distance between centers”.

2) Lathe Machine
Ø Introduction to Lathe Machine: Lathe is considered as one of the oldest machine
tools and is widely used in industries. It is called as mother of machine tools. It is said
that the first screw cutting lathe was developed by an Englishman named Henry
Maudslay in the year 1797. Modern high speed, heavy duty lathes are developed based
on this machine. The primary task of a lathe is to generate cylindrical work piece. The
process of machining a work piece to the required shape and size by moving the
cutting tool either parallel or perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the work piece is
known as turning. In this process, excess unwanted metal is removed. The machine
tool useful in performing plain turning, taper turning, thread cutting, chamfering and
knurling by adopting the above method is known as lathe.

Ø Parts of Lathe Machine:
Working Principle: The lathe is a machine tool which holds the work piece
between two rigid and strong supports called centers or in a chuck or face plate
which revolves. The cutting tool is rigidly held and supported in a tool post
which is fed against the revolving work. The normal cutting operations are
performed with the cutting tool fed either parallel or at right angles to the axis of
the work.
Bed: The bed is a heavy, rugged casting in which are mounted the working parts
of the lathe. It carries the headstock and tail stock for supporting the work piece
and provides a base for the movement of carriage assembly which carries the
tool.
Legs: The legs carry the entire load of machine and are firmly secured to floor by
foundation bolts.
Headstock: The headstock is clamped on the left hand side of the bed and it
serves as housing for the driving pulleys, back gears, headstock spindle, live
center and the feed reverse gear. The headstock spindle is a hollow cylindrical
shaft that provides a drive from the motor to work holding devices.
Gear Box: The quick-change gear-box is placed below the headstock and
contains a number of different sized gears.
Carriage: The carriage is located between the headstock and tailstock and serves
the purpose of supporting, guiding and feeding the tool against the job during
operation. The main parts of carriage are:

The compound rest is fitted on the top of cross slide and is used to
support the tool post and the cutting tool.
The tool post is mounted on the compound rest, and it rigidly clamps the
cutting tool or tool holder at the proper height relative to the work center
line.
The apron is fastened to the saddle and it houses the gears, clutches and
levers required to move the carriage or cross slide. The engagement of
split nut lever and the automatic feed lever at the same time is prevented
she carriage along the lathe bed.
Tailstock: The tailstock is a movable casting located opposite the
headstock on the ways of the bed. The tailstock can slide along the bed to
accommodate different lengths of work-piece between the centers. A
tailstock clamp is provided to lock the tailstock at any desired position.
The tailstock spindle has an internal taper to hold the dead center and the
tapered shank tools such as reamers and drills

Introduction to CNC Machine:
CNC: Computer and Numeric Control "A system in which computer is used
to control all the machine movements as per program stored in computer
memory…..” Conventionally, an operator decides and adjusts various
machines parameters like feed, depth of cut etc. depending on type of job,
and controls the slide movements by hand. In a CNC Machine functions
and slide movements are controlled by motors using computer programs.

Basic Concepts of Milling Operation
Dept of mecha eng. 27
Ø Introduction to Milling Operati0
Introduction
Milling is the cutting operation that removes metal
by feeding the work against a rotating cutter having
single or multiple cutting edges. 54
Flat or curved surfaces of many shapes can be machined by milling with
good finish and accuracy.
A milling machine may also be used for drilling, slotting, making a
circular profile and gear cutting by having suitable attachments.
Working Principle:
The work piece is held on the worktable of the machine. The table
movement controls the feed of work piece against the rotating cutter.
The cutter is mounted on a spindle or arbor and revolves at high speed.
Except for rotation the cutter has no other motion. As the work piece
advances, the cutter teeth remove the metal from the surface of work
piece and the desired shape is produced.

Overview & Working Principle
of CMM:
Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are extremely powerful
metrological instrument.
It is a device for measuring the physical geometrical characteristics of an
object.
This machine may be manually controlled by an operator or it may
be computer controlled.
Measurements are defined by a probe attached to the third moving axis of
this machine.
This probe touches the part of interest and allows collecting discrete
points on the object's surface.

CONCLUSION:
The training program helped in gathering the practical work
procedure alongside with furnishing the theoretical knowledge
Dept of mecha eng. 41
learnt till date.
We learned the procedure of a proper planning and scheduling
of the industrial work, this knowledge was shared in the
supervisor.
The purpose of the quality control, continuous checking of the
materials at the siteand preparation of design mixes were
taught.
Finally, all the gathered knowledge was practically viewed
during job. machineries and all the safety measures adopted
were clearly explained. Apart from technical knowledge we
were grateful enough for the engineers who shared their work
experience with us.
There are a lot of things which cannot be learnt from any
books or institution but an exposure to such a industryncan only
provide. Such industry related essential terms & knowledge
of work will help us throughout our work life.
