Problem Set 7

The document is a problem set for Applied Mathematics - II at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute Of Petroleum Technology, focusing on the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) using Charpit’s method. It includes tasks for finding complete integrals of various PDEs and classifying their nature (hyperbolic, parabolic, elliptic) in the xy-plane. Additionally, it requires the classification and reduction of certain PDEs into canonical forms.

Week 3 / February 2025 Problem Set 7 P.D.

Solution of PDEs by Charpit’s Method

1. Find the complete integral of

a) u2x + yuy = u b) pqz = p2 ( xq + p2 ) + q2 (yp + q2 )

c) x5 p − 4x2 q3 + 6x2 z − 2 = 0 d) 2(z + px + qy) = yp2
e) z = xp + yq − sin( pq) f) xp + yq − p2 q − z = 0
g) pq = z2 h) p + q = pq

using Charpit’s method.

Classification and Canonical Forms of Second Order PDEs

2. Classify the nature of each of the following partial differential equations (hyperbolic,
parabolic, elliptic) in the xy-plane.

(a) au xx + bu xy + auyy = 0
2 2
(b) sin2 x u xx + e x ey u xy + cos2 x uyy + e2x u x + ey uy = 0
(c) uyy − yu xx + x3 y = 0; y ̸= 0
(d) x2 u xx + y(y − 1)2 uyy − (y2 − 1) xu xy + xu x + yuy = 0

3. Classify and reduce the following PDEs into canonical form.

(a) (1 + x2 )u xx + (1 + y2 )uyy + xu x + yuy = 0

(b) u xx − 2 sin xu xy − cos2 xuyy − cos xuy = 0
(c) yu xx + ( x + y)u xy + xuyy = 0
(d) sin2 xu xx + sin 2xu xy + cos2 xuyy = x
(e) u xx + 2u xy + 4uyy + 2u x + 3uy = 0
(f) x2 u xx + 2xyu xy + y2 uyy = 0
