Table 2A: Font formatting commands in MS Word

Font Action to be performed, with examples Shortcut/options

1. Font type Select text, click on the Font type drop-down button to select from a list Ctrl + Shift + F
of types.
Examples: Arial, Consolas, Century, Bell MT, Comic Sans
2. Font size Select text, click on the Font Size drop-down button to select the size Ctrl + Shift + P
needed.
Examples: 8pt, 10pt, 12pt, 14pt

3. Bold Select text, click on the Bold command to turn the embolden feature on Ctrl + B
or off.
Example: Font bold on or Font bold off
4. Italics Select text, click on the Italics command to turn the feature on or off. Ctrl + I
Example: Font italics on or Font italics off
5. Underline Select text, click on the Underline command to turn the feature on or off. Ctrl + U
You can click on the Underline drop-down button to choose the type of
line to use.
Examples: Font underline off, underline, double underline, dotted
underline, thick line

6. Select text, click on the Strikethrough command to turn the feature on or


Strikethrough off.
Example: Strikethrough on or Strikethrough off
7. Subscript Type the text you want to appear as subscript first. Then click on the Ctrl + =

8. Superscript Type the text you want to appear as superscript first. Then click on Ctrl + Shift + =

9. Shadow Select text, click on the Text Effects and Typography command button to
turn the feature on or off. You can click on the Shadow drop-down
button to choose the type of shadow feature and shadow colour.
Examples: , outer shadow, half reflection

10. Text Select text, click on the Text Highlight Color command button to turn the
highlight colour feature on or off. You can click on the Text Highlight Color drop-down
button to choose the colour for the highlight feature.
Examples: yellow highlights, teal highlights, blue highlights

11. Font colour Select text, click on the Font Color command button to turn the feature
on or off. You can click on the Font Color drop-down button to choose
the colour.
Examples: red font, gold font

12. Clear all This removes all the formatting and brings the selecting to the default
formatting setting.
Select the text, click on the Clear All Formatting command button.

Examples: Sentence case, lower case, UPPER CASE, Capitalize Each Word

14. Grow Select the text, click on the Grow (Increase Font Size) command button to
(increase font make the font larger, or click on the Shrink (Decrease Font Size)
