4. Discuss the lesson Nelson Mandela learned from a donkey. (4)

• When Nelson Mandela was a young boy, he and his friends were playing on a donkey.

• They were climbing on and off the donkey’s back.

• When it came to Nelson Mandela’s turn, he jumped onto its back, and the donkey ran
straight into a thorn bush, causing him to get pricked and scratched.

• He felt shy and embarrassed in front of his friends; he learned that making people feel
bad and stupid is wrong.

5. Satyagraha means ‘fighting with peace.’ Explain how Gandhi’s Great March is an
example of this. (4)

• The Great March took place from Natal (Kwa-Zulu Natal) to the Transvaal (Gauteng).

• Over 2000 people marched with Gandhi, who was arrested and released many times
during the March.

• Some laws were changed due to this March.

• Satyagraha means ‘fighting with peace.’ This march is a good example of this as it was
a peaceful march even though Gandhi was arrested many times.
