INTRODUCTION
The goal for this math project is for us to figure out the
height of the building ( Rua central areia preta edf.
Residencia perola oriental) using trigonometry. We will
be using a clinometer to help us measure the angle of
elevation and a measuring tape to measure the distance
between the eye level and the building.

THE CHOSEN BUILDING
Type of building: Residential building
Total floors: 48 floors
Task: Find the height of the building
METHODOLOGY
1. Find the height of
eye level from
ground level
2. Find distance from
observer’s standing
point to the base of
the building
3. Find angle of
elevation from eye
level
4. Work out Building

HOW TO MAKE A
CLINOMETER
a) take a piece of string and colour it with a pink marker so
it’s visible
b) attach the string to the protractor
c) attach the eraser to the string for weight
d) attach your big straw to the protractor with tape
Materials used:
-tape
-protractor
-pink marker
-big straw
-eraser
Measuring the distance between
building and observer
Location 1: Distance (in cm)

=700+700+700+700+220 with ruler apps :
=30.2m (3020cm) 3009cm
Measuring the distance between
building and observer
Location 2: Distance (in cm)

Verify accuracy
=700+700+700+700+620
with ruler apps :
=34.2m (3420cm)
3416cm
MEASURE THE OBSERVER’S EYE LEVEL
By using measuring
tape to measure the
distance between
floor and eye level
(h1)
h1 = 1.56m
MEASURING THE ANGLE OF
ELEVATION
Location 1 :
Elevation angle
= 180o - 90o-11o
= 79o
MEASURING THE ANGLE OF
ELEVATION
Location 2 :
Elevation angle
= 180o - 90o-12o
= 78o
Applying trigonometry to find the height of
the building
Location 1 :
Distance = 30.2m
Angle of Elevation = 79o
Eye Level = 1.56m
Tan 79o = h1 / 30.2
h1 = 30.2 x Tan 79o
= 155.4m
H = h1 + h2
= 155.4 + 1.56
= 157m
Applying trigonometry to find the height of
the building
Location 2 :
Distance = 34.2m
Angle of Elevation = 78o
Eye Level = 1.56m
Tan 79o = h1 / 34.2
h1 = 34.2 x Tan 78o
= 160.9m
H = h1 + h2
= 160.9 + 1.56
= 162.5m
VERIFYING THE ANSWERS
By Estimation :
● Building has 48 floors
● Each floor approximately 3.5m tall
● Therefore, overall height 48x3.5 is 168m
By Measurement :
- From location 1 : distance 30.2m, overall
height is 157m
- From distance 34.2m, overall height is
162.5m.
- Average from above 2 answers, overall
height is (157+162.5)÷2 is 159.8m
CONCLUSION:
The building height by measurement (159.8m) is
close to which by estimation (168m), such that
variation is 4.9% only.
How do we improve the accuracy?
● We measured 2 different distances by measuring
tape and average the result to get a more
accurate answer
● a digital measuring app(ruler app) was used for
verifying the actual measurement
WHAT WE HAVE LEARNT FROM THIS
PROJECT
1. How to make a 2. Apply 3. Verifying
clinometer trigonometry i.e. answers by
opposite/adjacent estimation and
4. Improving accuracy (tangent) measurements
by measuring from 2 5.We understood that one’s
different distances and teamwork, dedication and
2 different ways to communication with one another,
measure is top priority, incorporating with
each other to produce and
outstanding piece of work
Challenges we have met
The building was very tall
We had to stand a very far distance from the
building to measure the angle of elevation.
Some of the measurements were inaccurate
We used an app to help measure it and it had
gotten a more accurate answer.
Not enough materials
We did not have enough materials to allow us
to measure the distance of the observer and
the building easily causing us to consume a
large amount of time
THANK YOU
