What is GIS

 Sure, it's an acronym for Geographic Information

Systems, but it means different things to different
people.

 To some, it's a tool to create and update maps.

 To others, it's a technology for combining and

interpreting mapped data.

 However, all agree that in the broadest sense, it's

a revolution in map structure, content and use.

A visit to the past

Emerged in the 1970-80s period. GIS represents a major shift

in the cartography paradigm. In traditional (paper) cartography,
the map was both the database and the display of geographic
information. For GIS, the database, analysis, and display are
physically and conceptually separate aspects of handling
geographic data. Geographic information systems comprise
computer hardware, software, digital data, people,
organizations, and institutions for collecting, storing, analyzing,
and displaying georeferenced information about the Earth.

What can GIS do ?

 Perform Geographic queries

 The ability of GIS to search databases and perform geographic
queries has saved many companies literally millions of dollars. GIS
has helped
 Decrease the time taken to answer client requests.
 Find land suitable for development.
 Locate the position of breaks in electrical circuits.
 Improve Organizational Integration
 Many organizations that have implemented GIS have found that one of
the main benefits is improved management of their own organization
and resources. Because GIS have the ability to link datasets together
by geography, they facilitate interdepartmental information sharing and
communication. By creating a shared database, information can
collected once and used many times.
