General Physics Assignment 1
Definitions:
1. Work
Work is done when a force is applied to an object and the object moves in the
direction of the applied force.
2. Energy
Energy is the capacity to do work. It exists in many forms such as kinetic energy,
potential energy, thermal energy, etc.
3. Power
Power is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred.
4. Impulse and Momentum
• Momentum is the product of an object's mass and velocity.
• Impulse is the change in momentum caused by a force applied over a time.
Sample Problems:
Work
Problem 1: A person pushes a box with a force of 50 N across 4 meters on a
frictionless surface. What is the work done?
Solution: 50 × 4 = 200
Answer: 200 J
Problem2 : A 10 N force is applied at a 60° angle to move an object 3 m.
Solution: 10 × 3 × cos(60°) = 30 × 0.5 = 15
Answer: 15 J
Energy
Problem 1: Find the kinetic energy of a 2 kg object moving at 3 m/s.
Solution: (1/2) × 2 × 3² = 1 × 9 = 9
Answer: 9 J
Problem 2: What is the potential energy of a 5 kg object 10 m above the ground?
Solution: 5 × 9.8 × 10 = 490
Answer: 490 J
Power
1. Problem 1: If 200 J of work is done in 5 seconds, what is the power?
Solution: 200 ÷ 5 = 40
Answer: 40 W
2. Problem 2: An engine does 6000 J of work in 20 seconds.
Solution: 6000 ÷ 20 = 300
Answer: 300 W
Impulse and Momentum
1. Problem 1: A 2 kg object moves at 3 m/s. Find its momentum.
Solution: 2 × 3 = 6
Answer: 6 kg·m/s
2. Problem 2: A force of 10 N is applied to an object for 2 seconds. Find the impulse.
Solution: 10 × 2 = 20
Answer: 20 N·s
