S1. BIOLOGY
TIME: 1½ HOURS
Attempt two items and answers in the spaces provided.

Item 1

Mr. Mutyana found his daughter, shivering, vomiting and on asking her if ate any food, she replied no
appetite for any food stuffs or drink, immediately Mr. Mutyana rushed to the nearby clinic for blood
testing, which came out positive with Malaria parasite in blood.

Task.

(a) Identify the malaria parasite that was found and also state the type of cells that parasite affect
in the body.

(b) Describe how that parasite reach into the body of human being.

(c) Explain the control measures that the government can put in place to stop the above type of
parasite.

Item 2
Mary’s garden comprised of plants that flower different coloured flowers. And every rainfall
season, many insects make her garden a home,. Her daughter was confused how these insects
are important.
Task
(a) As a senior one student, explain how insects are important to Mary and her daughter.

(b) Explain why insects are more successful than any other organism on the earth?

(c) State how harmful insects can be controlled.

Item 4

Mr. Joseph was feeling general body weakness. He went to the hospital and a blood sample was taken
from him and observed that his blood contained organisms that could not reproduce outside Mr.
Joseph’s cells but only when inside his cells.

Task

a. Identify the organism and give the characteristics which are used to classify the organisms
identified to the living and non-living.
b. Name any one disease caused by such organism in human beings and state how it’s transmitted,
its prevention and symptoms.

Item 4

Students of s2 went in a school garden. They uprooted whole mature plants of maize beans. They were
given a tsk of identifying which of the two plants is dicotyledonous or monocotyledonous plant. There
was a disagreement between them on which is a dicot and monocot.

Task

As a senior two student who have studied biology of the phylum Angiospermatophyla, how can you
settle the disagreement?
