For your information

Installing a CTC Pal / Waters 2777 with MassLynx 4.1

1. Setup and configure the Pal using the Gameboy or Object Manager.
2. Cycle the power on the PAL. Any errors seen on the gameboy at this stage must be resolved,
otherwise problems will be seen later.
3. Install MassLynx
4. Open MassLynx and configure the inlet editor. When you click Finish, the message ‘ML will now
install CTC Instrument Components’ will be displayed.
5. Wait for the red light and the message "Unable to get bed and plates".
6. Reset Comms and wait for the green light. If you don't wait, you will not get any method
parameters in the editor in step (9).
7. If a red light is still displayed, check that the autosampler is connected and turned on. If the error
"I/O Error 32" is displayed, you may need a later version of the CTC driver.
8. Close, then re-open Inlet Editor to ensure that the object list has been downloaded properly. The
object list is loaded whenever comms are established.
9. Open the Autosampler page (blue ellipse) and check that the default method parameters are
present. If no parameters are seen, it is probably because comms were not established between
MassLynx and the PAL before the Inlet Editor was opened. If this is the case, repeat steps 6-9.

If you upgrade or re-install MassLynx, follow steps 3-9 above. There is no need to setup the
configuration of the Pal again.
If you are upgrading from MassLynx 4.0 to 4.1, you must re-create your macros and methods, due
to a change in the file system used.

Changing the Configuration of a CTC Pal / Waters 2777 with MassLynx 4.1

1. Close MassLynx.
2. Re-configure the Pal using the Gameboy or Object Manager.
3. Cycle the power on the PAL. Any errors seen on the gameboy at this stage must be resolved,
otherwise problems will be seen later.
4. Restart MassLynx. MassLynx will attempt to download the object list from the Gameboy.
5. Reset comms.
6. Wait for the green light. If you don't wait you will not get any method parameters in the editor in
step (8).
7. Close, then re-open Inlet Editor to ensure that the object list has been downloaded properly.
8. Open the Autosampler page and check that the default method parameters are present. If no
parameters are seen, it is probably because comms were not established between MassLynx and
the PAL before the Inlet Editor was opened. If this is the case, repeat steps 5-8.

Error messages

Message Common Cause

PAL Validate Method: Object in Atom issued is Non-MUX macro selected when in MUX mode.
not an Object while validating method.
PAL Validate Method: Term used is invalid while Inject Volume is too high or too low for configured
validating method. syringe.
PAL Validate Method: Method object is not a Syringe in method does not match currently configured
Syringe while validating method. syringe.

Further Information
1. If a parameter such as syringe type is changed in the method, the method will no longer match the
current configuration in the Pal. You will probably get a Pal Validate Method error message when
you start a batch, and the queue will be paused. Reset comms to clear the error state, and then
either correct the method, or change the configuration of the Pal as described above.

2. When a cycle (.cyx) is changed using the cycle editor, the method files (.pmx) that use it are not
automatically changed. The method files will use the old version of the cycle until you update the
method file. When you load the method file into the Inlet Editor, the message "Cycle on disk is
different to cycle in method " will be displayed on the autosampler page. To allow the method to
use the new cycle, select the cycle in the Available Cycles drop-down and then press Save to copy
the new cycle into the method. If more than one method (.pmx) uses the cycle, the cycle must be
re-selected in each one individually in order to populate the change.

3. If a cycle is edited or created on a MassLynx system that has the cycle editor enabled, that cycle
may only be used on systems that have the cycle editor. Standard MassLynx PAL users (i.e. those
without the cycle editor) will not be able to use the cycle.

4. Paldriv.exe is still installed with MassLynx, but is no longer used and should not be manually run.
