Age Related Macular Degeneration Essays
Review: Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people
over the age of 50. Every ten years after the age of 50 the prevalence of this disease increases
exponentially. Many different factors contribute to the development of AMD including genetic,
environment, and metabolic functions. Aside from smoking, abnormal blood pressure, and an
unhealthy diet low in fruits and vegetables, many more studies are concluding that similar
inflammatory and oxidative processes seen in other age related diseases are also playing a key role
in the development of AMD. This disease affects the central areas of the retinaand choroid. In return
central vision is impaired while peripheral vision is usually not lost. AMD is... Show more content on

Dry Macular Degeneration: The early and most common form of AMD is called dry (atrophic) or
nonneovascular macular degeneration. About 90% of AMD cases are known to be in this form.
This form does not involve abnormal blood vessels and or leaking of fluid. Vision impairments
are still great and potential of complete vision loss is still possible. People affected by dry AMD
experience central vision impairments, limited area of central vision, and limited vision when in
areas of reduced light. Dry AMD is thought to be the result of the retina breaking down because of
the formation of deposits, known as drusen, under the macula. The macula is a small area within the
retina that is responsible for central vision. It s believed that these deposits interfere with vitamin
transport, oxygen transport, and waste removal in the aged eye directly affecting the macula causing
it to thin and dry out, losing its function. Depending on how severe this thinning and degeneration of
the retina is, vision impairments will vary. Macular degeneration in its early stages is associated
with minimal vision impairments, large drusen, and other pigmentary abnormalities in the macula.
Drusen are deposits of fatty proteins that accumulate below the basement membrane of the retinal
pigment epithelium. People over the age of 50 years have at least one small hard drusen in one or
both eyes. People with large, soft drusen are the ones at high risk for AMD. Hard
Analyzing Nampeyo s Painting The Americas
The Americas

First piece is a shallow bowl, hand coiled and outdoor fired, about 6 inches width, and 2 inches
length, and height. The piece was made in america, in 1901 by Nampeyo, in Arizona. The bowl
looks almost wooden, the artist probably used brown clay. The painting inside the bowl, looks like
a abstract bird form, with a stylized eagle tail. Nampeyo used black and red paint, and a lot of
different shapes. Starting from the bottom, it looks like two triangles that curve and join the black
thin lines in, the inside rim of the bowl. Above that are two lines probably indicating that she moving
on to a different part of the painting, there s a square but its curved in on both sides in the middle

On each side of the circle about a centimeter away there is a spot shaded in with black paint. In the
next part of the painting, there is a line, again. There is a longer rectangle, with two half moons

three horizontal thick red squiggly lines, again two vertical black line. In the middle of the
rectangle, the top middle part has 5 horizontal black lines, with a zigzag line on the top of the 5
lines, on the both of the middle part, it looks like a shape of a wave, that is painted red, a bigger
wave on top with no color. in the middle, it starts to make a tube like shape, that splits into two tie
looking shapes shaded black with a thin line that is not shaded with any color and a mini square
on the left shape and a bigger square on the right shape about a centimeter away from the lines. On
the side of the tube shape there is a long leaf, looking shape, shaded black with a small space in the
middle of it unshaded. I chose this piece because i like the painting that was on the bowl, it
Benefits Of Supplying Quality Customer Service
Introduction
The benefits of supplying quality customer service are well documented for creating value for the
business. Customer service leads to profitability and brand reputation (Armistead and Clark, 1992);
Quality customer service leads to higher levels of competitiveness (Chan et al. 2005); Quality
customer service reduces costs and boosts profitability (Crosby, 1980); and quality customer service
increases customer retention and improves brand image (Stamatis, 1996).
Therefore, it is obvious that a quality understanding of customer service can add substantial value to
a business. Venkatraman and Ramanujam (1986) briefly incorporate this notion with business size
by adding that size and growth are typically used as a precedent for evaluating business success.
Conversely, Lash (1989) challenges this by explaining that small and large, profitable and
unprofitable companies offer good and bad customer service. These conflicting concepts form the
basis of the investigation into, at what point does customer service strategies diverge depending on
the size or growth of the business? In approaching this question, forms of business size and growth
and various aspects of customer service need to be defined. It is common knowledge that there are
many ways to measure the size or growth rate of a business depending on the complimenting
independent variables. However, the measurement of customer service comes with more complexity.
This is due to service quality being difficult to
Television And The Internet Advertising
Television and the internet ads on use of marijuana Rhetorical Analysis
Television and the internet is a good channel of passing the messages about the adverse effects of
the use of marijuana. The office of the National Drug Control Policy is an American government
action which depends on safeguards the health of the people of America. The above the influence
initiative is a program of the not for profit Partnership at Drugfree.org. Their overall goal is to
help teens reject negative influences of drug and alcohol. The initiative is a friendly site for the
youths since it uses favorable language and identifies with the youth s lifestyle while trying to
change it. Drug abuse affects everyone in the society from the young to the old. However, in recent
years, the abuse of marijuana has majorly been linked to teens. Is because of the peer pressure that
spreads at an alarming rate. In the current digital world, youths are looking for information over the
internet, as opposed to hard copy newspapers and magazines. The internet or the TV is mostly used
by teens and adults in looking for new information. Advertisers on the internet compete to catch the
eye of the readers. I choose two advertisements that warn people not to smoke the marijuana. The
two advertisements are on the office of the National Drug Control Policy advertisement, and the
other is an above the influence. The two sites have different audiences with the latter have more
appeal for the youths.

Lactose Intolerance Syndrome
Module four discussed lactose intolerance and dumping syndrome in great detail, then briefly
explained other disorders of the GI tract and pancreases. Lactose intolerance occurs when the body
can no longer efficiently digest lactose result in bloating, cramping, and sever diarrhea. Lactose is
not directly absorbed by the body, so lactase has to break it down into glucose and galactose. The
breakdown of lactose occurs in the last part of the small intestine, but if this does not occur then
lactose will move to the colon causing an osmotic effect. The osmotic effect will causes water to
diffuse into the colon through capillaries of the intestinal tissue. Colonic bacteria will start to
metabolize lactose, and produce gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen gas.... Show

Lactose intolerance can be tested for by measuring the amount of hydrogen gas that is present when
the person exhales. Dumping syndrome occurs when a person has had gastric surgery involving
stomach staples or removal of a section of the stomach. Stomach contents are emptied too quickly
into the duodenum, where they mix with pancreatic and intestinal juice which causes rapid digestion
of carbohydrates resulting in glucose. There are two problems that arise from rapid digestion of
carbohydrates. The first problem occurs because glucose is absorbed rapidly, which causes a
spike blood glucose levels leading to a rise in insulin, resulting in blood glucose levels to drop;
otherwise known as hypoglycemia. The second problem arises because glucose digestion occurs at
a faster rate than absorption, leading to a buildup of glucose in the small intestine. An osmotic effect
occurs where water enters the intestines resulting in sever diarrhea. An abundance of water is lost
from the body due to the diarrhea causing a decrease in blood

Superman American Myths
The famed hero, Superman was and is still one of the most influential superheroes in history. In
1938, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster fashioned an immigrant story that reflected their experiences as
first generation Americans. The tale of the rocket from the doomed planet Krypton hurtling to Earth,
is a classic stranger in a strange land narrative. Shy, bookish, young men of Jewish descent, Siegel
and Shuster were trying to become part of the American Dream. (Themes from Analysis of Superman
: The Man of Steel by John Byrne). By personifying Superman as the American Dream, Jerry and
Joe were able to create an idol for all Americans, but also showing how America came together by
people immigrating from numerous places into the melting pot . This aspect of Superman being an

Though Superman s mien of the American dream is a profound part of his character, his origin

The Stages of Childhood Development
CHAPTER 01: Preschool child

1.1 Preschool child

Preschool age is basically identified as year three to six. In psychology this age group categorize as
early childhood . This early childhood stage is more imperative in the child development and their
learning procedure. That s why the concept of preschool has come to play.
Preschoolers are always on the move, exploring their world with excitement, curiosity, and an
apparently endless source of energy. The capacity of learning in this stage is enormous. They learn
and develop from each experience, association, and adventure that they meet. Having the enough

Understanding the early childhood development means to understand the behavioral, cognitive,
psychosocial, language and motor development that children get through their early childhood stage.
Psychologists state about early childhood development in according to different views. The theories
by Sigmund Freud stressed out the importance of early childhood actions and experiences that
almost completely focused on mental disorders than normal performance.
According to Freud s early childhood developmental theories it is clarify as a progression of
psychosexual stages. At Three Essays on Sexuality (1915), Freud tells that stages as oral, anal,
phallic, latency and genital. Every period connect the fulfillment of a libidinal desire and be able to
afterward play a role in adult personality and behavior.
Erik Erikson says that each period of child development based on overcome a conflict. As an
example, the main conflict through the early childhood stage engages in creating a feeling of
personal identity. Success or failures within the conflicts at each period can impact on the whole
functioning. For an example, failure to develop a personal identity results in role confusion through
the adolescent stage.
Early childhood development can be discussed under five developmental areas. Those are identified

A Good Man Is Hard To Find Essay
You are sitting in your living room at home watching the nightly news. The lead story for the night
is about a family of four that were murdered. After seeing and hearing about something like that we
often ask ourselves, What could possess a person enough to kill another human being? What is it
that drives a person to kill? Will we ever know? Many authors use this unique mentalityin short
stories. They write about what the killer thinks and how he/she acts on his/her thoughts. One of
these stories is A Good Man Is Hard To Find , by Flannery O Connor. In this story O Connor s
victim, The Misfit, is an escaped convict. He was in the Federal Penitentiaryfor killing his father.

The thrill of the fantasy for the killer was having enemies, and that s the only way The Misfit looked
at the situation.
Moments later The Misfit releases some of his stress when he tells two of his companions to
bring two of the children back into the woods. The grandmother hears gunfire and shivers in pain,
not knowing the two children were just killed. She then begins to ask The Misfit about his life, I
just know you re a good man, the woman said (O Connor 688). The Misfit slowly began to tell the
woman about his parents and his childhood. He explained how his father looked down upon him;
you re a different breed of dog, he once said (O Connor 688). The grandmother waits with
anticipation as The Misfit tells her about his life. After hearing about his hardships and
misfortunes, tells The Misfit to pray for help. He listens to her and shows no response. The Misfit
did not know what he was punished for: somewheres along the line I done something wrong and I
got sent to the penitentiary...I forget what I done lady. I set there... trying to remember what it was
I done and I ain t recalled it to this day! (O Connor 689). This statement by The Misfit supports the
case that he is a very confused man. Could a mental defect be the cause behind his actions and not
remembering his past? The Misfit then explained that a psychiatrist at the penitentiary said that he
killed his father, but I known that for a lie he states (O Connor
