Namioka Character Foils
Mortifying occurrences at a birthday party or at school as a child can haunt a person until they are an
adult. What made the experience traumatizing? Was it the way they handled themselves? Potentially,
yet, it s usually because of the reaction of the people surrounding them. Others ignorance is key to
swerving away from humiliation. Which explains why people can find themselves more comfortable
around friends for their purpose is not to laugh at them but with them. Meg Gleason never exposed
the narrator s mistakes that she made or insulted her traditions, even when the narrator disliked her
own traditions. With the All American Slurp, among differing themes, Lensey Namioka manifested
throughout her story the theme of how friends understand... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Authors use character foils to convey major differences between various characters; the technique
works especially well when discussing cultures. For instance, the Lin family s behavior at the
Gleason s dinner party in contrast to the assumed American born guests. Based off of their
different backgrounds, the Lin s ended up confused about how the theri evening meals. We never
ate raw celery, or any kind of vegetable raw. We always had to disinfect the vegetables in boiling
water first. When we were presented with our first relish tray, the raw celery caught us
unprepared. (55) Mrs. Gleason announced that the dinner was served and invited us to the dining
table. It was lavishly covered with platters of food, but we couldn t see and chairs around he table.
So we helpfully carried over some dining chairs and sat down. All the other guests just stood there.
(57) Instead of adding to their embarrassment, Mrs. Gleason politely informed them by whispering
how dinner is conducted in their household. Although there may have been of few stares, the dinner
scene was incomparable to the happenstance in the Lakeview restaurant. The Lins found themselves
victim of another cultural difference. The Lakeview was a French restaraunt which contributed to
the family s helplessness. Ordering four meals at random, the Lins received a plate of soup each as
an appetizer. Knowing that soup generally comes in bowls, the siblings were puzzled. Fortunately,
wanting to adapt quickly, the two elder members of the family prepared by reading books on
western etiquette before they moved to America. Nonetheless, their cultural habits still followed. As
any respectable Chinese knows, the respectable way to eat soup is to slurp. This helps to cool the
liquid and prevent you from burning your lips. It also shows your appreciation. (63) Hence their
untraditional behavior according to American standards. The shock
The Theory That Hyperkinetic Impulse Disorder
level of efficiency, giving rise to a negative flux in discipline response, reward deficiency, and
increased aggression and impulsivity. The 1917 1918 outbreak of encephalitis is often dubbed the
instigator of interest in the behavior and neurological diversity of ADHD. Following the epidemic,
child physicians were presented with a group of children who had managed to survive the cerebral
infection, and yet were left significantly changed in personality. They were described as being
attention impaired, socially disruptive, and had noted moments of cognitive difficulty in function
such as memory. In fact, the large number of children present exhibiting these behavioral shifts post
cranial illness/injury resulted in much professional and educational curiosity. These studies returned
to light in the 1950s, when the first official investigations into the neurological mechanisms
underlying the then called Hyperkinetic Impulse Disorder, recognized that the behavioral patterns of
children with the disorder and those who had suffered thalamic damage due to sickness such as
encephalitis were nearly identical. This reinforced the theory that Hyperkinetic Impulse Disorder
was due to a central nervous system(CNS) deficit occurring in the thalamic area, where stimulation is
filtered through the brain. It was then hypothesized that an excess of external, unfiltered stimuli
would cause traits such as distractibility, hyperactivity, and social cue ignorance. In later years, it was
Defining Normative And Subjective Culture
We are all defined, and heavily influenced by, the culture in which we have grown and adopted.
Culture is defined as the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation,
people, or other social group , according to The Oxford Dictionary, and can be separated into two
specific classifications known as normative and subjective culture. Normative culture is the
connecting beliefs, values, tradition, economy, political and social institutions, artistic expressions
and collective history of various interacting groups of people . Subjective culture, however,
represents a society s characteristic way of perceiving its social environment . My personal culture is
emphasized by five categories of subjective culture, including nationality, regional identity,
education, social/economic class, and age. Growing up as an American has shaped the culture with
which I identify. Nationality, according to The Law Dictionary, is that quality or character which
arises from the fact of a person s belonging to a nation or state. Nationality determines the political
status of the individual, especially with reference to allegiance; while domicile determines his civil
status. Nationality arises either by birth or by naturalization. Because The United Statesis so diverse,
its citizens, including myself, are exposed to many different cultures which expand our
enculturation, the process by which an individual learns the traditional content of a culture and
Teen People Magazine Essay
Teen People Magazine

The Teen People, September edition, is a magazine designed to appeal to young female readers. Its
content features well known celebrities, use of bright and flashy colors, and an organized layout that
attracts an upbeat, young readership interested in high quality appearance and style. Although the
magazine s main focus may appear to insure a great fashion sense, it also concentrates on a
philosophical orientation by covering a more diverse readership that includes all colors, sizes, and
shapes of females. Teen People also expands its audience by recognizing both visual and text
oriented audiences. To appeal to the more visual oriented audience, the magazine uses exotic
photography in the advertisements for Self ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, the advertisement on page sixty four of the magazine uses an angelic/fairy tale theme to
introduce Secret Deodorant to the visually stimulated audience. In the center of the page, a fairy
like woman stands in the midst of a very surreal setting with stars and a light blue sky. By using a
woman who personifies a fairy, Secret manages to connect the new brand of Secret Violet Dazzle
with a mystical theme. The bright hues of purple and the naturalistic atmosphere, once again, attract
very young viewers to the product. Secret pictures a frail, flawless female to suggest that varying
types of women may use their product and still resemble the pure and enchanting image. Thus, they
incorporate the text When you re strong, you Sparkle, to show that by using their product, one can
eliminate the fear of smelling and sparkle with confidence. The advertisement itself is very striking
to the human eye. It s busy layout and choice in colors captivates those who enjoy striking
photography.

Unlike the Self Esteem and Secret Deodorant advertisements, which project a flirtatious and
heavenly attitude, Ralph Lauren s advertisement for the new scented hair collection portrays a model
with a sexually suggestive attitude. Ralph Lauren, a clothing line known for its natural yet sexy
look, attracts young females with the desire to be well known. Although the photography appears
rather simple and plain, the readers
The Mexican American Border And Its Effects On The United...
I am writing this letter to respectively bring your attention to the Mexican American border, its
damaging effect on the United States economy, and potential solutions to this specific situation
which has become known as the Border Crisis. As you may already know, the border runs from
Tijuana, Baja California to Tamaulipas and Texas. According to the International Boundary and
Water Commission, the border s length is 1,954 miles and is the most frequently crossed
international border, mainly by undocumented immigrants from Mexicoand Central America. As an
attempt to contain this influx of illegal migration, former President George W. Bush signed the
Secure Fence Act of 2006 stating, This bill will help protect American people. This bill will make
our borders more secure. It is an important step toward immigration reform. While Mr. Bush may
have had the United Statessafety at heart, one must question if the border fence is actually helping
the economy or hurting it? There are several problems that have risen following the creation of the
border fence; immigrants coming from The Northern Triangle have actually increased, Texas has
become the deadliest entry state, undocumented and unaccompanied children are costing taxpayers
even more, and simply maintaining the border fence is a very high cost. To start with, when people
hear the word immigration , many automatically refer to Mexican immigrants. However, few tend to
realize that the majority of immigrants are coming
Tea Stamp Act Analysis
Through the analysis of primary historical sources, one finds that Tea/stamp act, the sturred up Battle
of Lexington, the American Revolution and slavery contributed to the American Revolution which
led to the Civil War. First, one principal was the stamp act: a method for antagonizing and unifying
the colonies. On the one hand, British men were collecting more than ten times as much revenue in
America than they had been before in 1763. In a petition to the British government, the Congress
denied that the colonies could rightfully be taxed except through their own provincial assemblies.
Many New Englanders had stopped buying English goods to protect the sugar act of 1764 and the
Stamp Act, causing the boycott to spread. Meanwhile, Townshend
Benefits Of Having A Well Written Resume
Having a well written resume can tell a lot of a person who is applying for a job. The hiring team
or managers who are looking to hire people are looking for specific requirements that match theirs
and looking for someone that stands out. By learning different tools and tactics on improving skills
and speaking abilities will only help stand out for a company to choose your resume and invite for
an interviewand possibly start your career.
In the jobs search I searched for Operations Manager. With the degree I am going to accomplish,
that is a career I would like to dive into. I have always liked the operational side of a business.
When conducting the search there weren t any openings in my area where I live but more towards
the St. Paul/ Minneapolis area. Unless I wanted to relocate in the future that would probably where I
would want to go to search for jobs like that.
One of the jobs I saw that was somewhat local was an Operations Manager was for an Company that
manufactures segments for collection vehicles. Some of the qualifications for this job include;
bachelors in business, 3 5 years experience, oversee plant production, conduct meetings, forecasting
production and applying schedules, incorporate new methods and costs.
After looking at my resume, I know there are things I should change or fix. In the resume builder I
decided to build a new resume with the information I already had. I looked at different samples and
picked the outlay that I like and went from
Personification In The Three Ravens
The Three Ravens is an english folk ballad, which was first printed in a song book Melismata
compiled by Thomas Ravenscroft. It was published in the year 1611.
It is a ballad about three ravens who take up a scavenger bird conversation about where and what
they should eat for breakfast that morning.
In the ballad The Three Ravens Thomas Ravenscroft uses personification and colourful imagery to
discuss the ballad, and in the ballad the reader is led to expect something, but we discover a whole
new theme in the ballad which is very interesting to know about. And the Thomas Ravenscroft uses a
non scavenger as a scavenger bird in the ballad.

There were three ravens that sat on a tree. (Ravenscroft,Thomas, The Three Ravens (1611) Ballad
provided by the instructor). According to the poet he says that there were three ravens who sat on
a tree They were as black as they might be. (Ravenscroft,Thomas, The Three Ravens (1611) Ballad
provided by the instructor). As we all know that all ravens are black. When one of the raven asks
the other ravens what is their breakfast for today.

Down in yonder green fields, There lies a knight slain under his shield. (Ravenscroft,Thomas, The
Three Ravens (1611) Ballad provided by the instructor). one of the raven tells the other ravens
that our breakfast is the green field, were lies a knight who is dead. And the knight is being
guarded by a shield. In this ballad the ravens are considered as scavengers which is wrong, because
as we all people know that ravens are not scavengers and they mostly feed other small insects and
worms and they also feed on eggs of other smaller birds.

In this ballad The Three Ravens the ravens are considered as wild birds who feed on dead
organisms. But ravens as we know are not tame animals as they do not welcome any human
presence near them but they also do not depend on dead meat as given in the ballad. In the Ballad
The Three Ravens the ravens are mostly given a character that is suitable for a scavenger like vulture.

Down there comes a fallow doe, As great with your as she might go. (Ravenscroft,Thomas, The
Three Ravens (1611) Ballad provided by the instructor). Now in the ballad there is a magical touch
where there is a lady who is
Maria s Dance In Metropolis
3. Discuss one scene, which you liked and why you feel it was a good scene.
One of the scenes this observed liked from Metropolis is the Maria s dance. This clip includes
previously lost and restored footage from Fritz Lang s movie masterpiece. OK, this has to be one
of the strangest things I ve ever seen in a movie. At the time, the observer watched this and listened
to Spoonman by Soundgarden on the observer s alarm clock went off. The scene is a bit disturbing,
yet, the scene is an amazing bit of film work. The observer was a bit amazed this was allowed to be
filmed for its time. (Metropolis )
4. What was the point of the movie? (ex: a political statement, a moral idea, reflections on society)
Metropolis was produced ten years after the
