Life And Writing Of Elizabeth Bishop
When telling someone else s story perhaps even one s own it is hard not to do so from a certain
perspective or position. Two recent films whose subject is the poet Elizabeth Bishop provide
examples of distinct storytelling approaches: the first, a documentary with a particular political slant;
the second, a semi fictionalized biopic that is a little fast and loose with facts and chronology.

With some anticipation I and my wife went to see Welcome to This House (2015), Barbara Hammer
s film about poet Elizabeth Bishop through the lens of her various domiciles. I expected an
exploration into the meaning and impact of those homes on Bishop s life and writing, but I was
disappointed.

Displaced most of her life, place became important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This distracts us from the real power Bishop s homes had on her, especially the Great Village house,
with its famous scream from her short story, In the Village, but also the house in the Brazilian
mountains north of Rio, Samambaia, which Lota designed and built and into which she and Bishop
moved in 1952.

Samambaia became her true home, novelist William Boyd noted in the Guardian a few years ago.
She wrote many of her most famous poems in the house and in the little studio Lota built for her
on its grounds and when she lost it after Lota s death (Lota bequeathed it to Mary Morse, about
whom I ll say more below); Bishop lost more than a house.

As Boyd writes, Bishop s eventual departure from the place that she had loved, and that made her as
a poet, was fraught, shaming and embittering.

To focus on Bishop s alleged affairs as Hammer does lends nothing to our understanding of the poet
or her poetry. Bishop led, as Boyd asserts, a life of profound emotional and intellectual complexity.
Reducing Bishop s life to sexual pursuits or conquests that may or may not have taken place in these
houses totally misses the mark and makes the film a sort of agenda vehicle rather than documentary.

If only this film focused instead on the conflict Bishop felt between her
The Tale of Robin Hood Essay example
THESIS STATEMENT Although only slightly factual in historical setting, the legends of Robin
Hood have captivated the imaginations of young and old alike through the charming stories
concerning the characters of Sherwood Forest.

PURPOSE STATEMENT Through critical analysis and research concerning the legends and
characters surrounding Robin Hood, this paper will present the theme of social justice for the
common man as purported by the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest.

INTRODUCTION The tale of Robin Hood has evolved into one of the greatest legends of all time
and has fascinated the minds of all who have heard about it. The stories surrounding Robin Hood
and his adventures took place in the forests of Sherwood and Barnsdale dating ... Show more content

If Robin Hood was an outlaw who did not obey the law, then why was he viewed as a heroic
character? The answer was that he stood for the common man. He was a people s hero and a
champion of the poor. Anthony Pollard reveals Robin Hood s reasoning for robbing the rich and
giving to the poor is his book Imagining Robin Hood. He explains that He does not rob the rich to
give to the poor. He robs from the undeserving and helps the deserving (4). Robin Hood is
considered a fictional character but the impact his legends had on our society is very real, and will
influence generations form many years to come.

THE REAL ROBIN HOOD When dealing with the fictional character of Robin Hood, it is easy to
get lost in the fantasy of his tale because of the additions to the story through oral tradition over
the years. However, there was a real life Robin Hood who was much different than what twentieth
century cinemas portrayed him as being. The real Robin Hood was born at Locksley in the county
of Nottingham during the reign of Henry II. It may be confusing to many people to hear that he
was a yeoman, nothing more, nothing less. The ideal supremacy from his legends depicts him as
being a knight in shining armor, but the history from his ballads tells otherwise. Although no
scholar has ever proved his existence, the setting in which most of his exploits took place was very
real.. His
Japanese Americans 1940
In October 1940, Americans cracked one code from Japanese. The Japanese was the code for sending
secret messages. They were all aware of Japanese s plan for the Southeast Asia. Japan conquered
European colonies, it could be threatened. The American controlled Philippine Islands Guam. The
government sent the Chinese resistance to stop the Japanese advance. French Indoctrina, Cambodia,
Laos, Vietnam. Roosevelt cut off oil shipments to Japan. The Japanese continued their conquests.

An allied prisoner reported that from war. A string of victories is when the Japanese seemed to be

anxious to get back at, or strike at, in the Pacific. United States of America wanted revenge of the
Japanese for the Pearl Harbor bombing. In April 1943 sixteen bombers under command of
Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle bombed Tokyo and several other Japanese cities. The
bombs didn t do so much damage just a little. Raid made an important movement psychological

Doolittle s little raid on the Japanese raised Americans morale, shook confidence of some in
Japan, as the Japanese citizens said. We started to doubt that we were invincible Some of the
Japanese worried that their defeat and controlling a vast empire caused them to spread their
resources so very thin. The allies began to turn tides of war slowly. May 1942, an American fleet

The Ideas Of Theorists That Have Influenced The Changing...
The purpose of this essay is to explore the ideas of theorists that have influenced the changing nature
of play and how practitioners can plan purposeful play within curriculums, approaches and
frameworks. Other key points of this essay include how play and recreation enrich the lives of
children or young adults and what that means for practitioners. Hurd and Anderson, (2011) states
that playis imaginative, intrinsically motivated, nonserious, freely chosen and actively engaging,
where as recreation is an activity of leisure and considered to be fun .

Over the centuries play has changed children born in an earlier era would not of played in the same
way as children do today, this could be for many different reasons. One being ... Show more content

Although this could be a downfall as technology is designed for indoor play and children can
become entertained more by technology so there is a propensity for fewer outdoor activities and
exercise. (Thomas, 2005) Therefore leaving children with less of a desire to play outdoors, some
children may only get the outdoors experience through their settings and set frameworks.

Another way that play has changed is through education, play is seen as a way to educate children
by letting them explore their surroundings and learn from their experiences, which has been
developed into a curriculum for 3 to 7 year olds called the Foundation Phase (Gov.wales, 2014). The
idea and concept of learning through play was taken from the Reggio Emilia approach. Less than a
decade ago, children didn t have the opportunity to learn through play and were taught through
books or sat at a desk doing worksheet tasks, play was seen as leisure for children and not in a
way to learn. Also comparing today s educational system to earlier eras, school wasn t seen to be as
important for children, they had to go to work to provide for their families. (Bbc.co.uk, 2014)
Children today get to gain an array of skills and knowledge that allows them to progress through the
learning spectrum and having more freedom within their learning. With this children are
Legal And Political System Of Australia
Legal and Political System Australia s government design was taken from the British Westminster
system after those who originally colonized Australia. A functional, western style democracy, there
are a number of minor political parties operating in Australia but the country s federal politics is an
essential 2 party system at present, much like the United States (Our Country, 2015). Power in
Australia is shared between various levels of government, the Federal, State and territorial.
Establishing operations within Australia would require understanding the Federal government s
laws and policies as well as the laws and policies of the six state governments as well as two
additional territories each with its own regional governing body. Law... Show more content on

Australia s main trading partners are China, Japan, the United States, Republic of Korea and
Singapore. Nearly half of Australia s trade activity in terms of imports and exports are with these
5 countries alone. Particularly with the recent growth of the Chinese economy, Australia s chief
trading partner, the country has seen growth in its exports. However very recently the growth of
the Chinese economy has been slowing which is a risk to Australian exports. 72% of Australia s
two way trade is within the APEC countries. Like the G20, this trade relationship is quite
significant. Australia s single top import is personal travel services, however overall most of what
Australia imports is petroleum products and motor vehicles. It s appetite for refined petroleum
increased by 12% over the past 5 years. Australia s top exports are its natural resources, iron ores,
coal and natural gas. (Australian Government: Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 2014)
Since 2012, Australia has maintained a mostly negative trade balance, perhaps amid uncertainty of
its currency against the US dollar, but more likely is its economic growth is causing it to import
more and more petroleum products which it s exports of its own natural resources is not able to
match. Australia and Canada have similar economic policies that govern their banking systems. As a
result both countries
Community Volunteering
I have made a difference in my community by volunteering for many organizations. To start, I have
participated in the Lisbon Community Band and provided musical entertainment for the community
to enjoy free of charge. Each year, my town band has a winter and summer concert. These concerts
include a new set of songs for the communityto hear. Musicrelaxes the mind and is believed to have
certain healing properties. I have been in my town s community band for eight years now and I
plan to be a member for as long as I can. The community band is a valuable and necessary aspect of
my community. I also have participated in my town s Boy Scout Troop in the past, helping out

transfusions for medical reasons. As a Boy Scout, we also aided other organizations, such as the
Lisbon Historical Society. Furthermore, my troop assisted in running events, such as my town s
fall festival. My community extends to other parts of the state, as I have volunteered for
organizations in nearby towns. One such organization that I volunteer at is the Lawrence and
Memorial Hospital in New London. I volunteer in the summers in the Lawrence and Memorial
Lobby shop gift shop. I feel I am able to make a difference in the life of those who come into the
gift shop. Specifically, I attempt to bring smiles to the faces of the customers and make their
experience in the gift shop enjoyable. Another organization I volunteer for is the Slater Library in
Jewett City. One summer I developed a reading and science experiment program that lasted for
many weeks and motivated children to read, as well as become interested in the sciences. Through
the creation of this program, I have observed children having a great time performing these science
experiments while being motivated to read challenging books. Overall, I believe I have made a
significant impact on my community and I will continue to contribute my town in the
Bessie Wright Essay
There once lived a woman named Bessie Wright who lived in Thompson Georgia. She lived with
a family of 4 . Mom, dad, and 1 sister who was 5 at the time. Bessie Wright was born on May 5,
1816 in Thompson GA. She lived slightly poor. Her mom was a stay at home mom she wasn t
allowed to work . Her dad worked as a stableman. His job was to clean up after the horses and
make sure the saddles were ready for the riders. Bessie did not work because she was too young,
so she just stayed at home and played with the animals that were around the house. One day Bessie
and her mom drove to a small town named Harlem. They were there to get some fabric so they
could finish making the quilt. While they were walking through Harlem, Bessie accidently bumped
in to a young gentleman named John Vanburen. When they looked in to each other s eyes it was
love at first sight .John courted Bessie for only a short time before asking her for her hand in
marriage. John had his own land where he farmed and had his own livestock and crops. Since John
was 20 and Bessie was 14, Bessie s father took in to consideration of Johns accomplishments such
as, his farm prior to approving the marriage. Once Bessie s father approved... Show more content on

there was food to eat on a daily basis. John did the best he could with what livestock and crops he
had left. Even though, they were experiencing the drought, their love for each other never
Business Liability Insurance
Liability insurance is a way to protect your business against the effects of potential damage that
your business can cause to other people or their property. Let us say that somebody got injured or
his property was damaged due to another person s business, that person can legally sue the owner
of the business. The owner would be held responsible for the harm that his business has caused.
The definition for the word liability is as follows: Being legally responsible for something . When
the legal responsibility is established, the owner of the business will have to pay compensation for
the harm that his business has done to a person or to their property. If the harm was an injury, the
National Health Service can ask for compensation for the costs of... Show more content on

This is because the possibility of younger drivers having accidents is much greater than a more
experienced driver. Also the more power a car has is greater the chances of an accident so the cost
of the premium will be higher. The price of the premium also depends on the business sector that
the insurer is concentrated on as some firms specialize in particular sectors and can evaluate the
risks more accurately. This way they will give better offers, (usually a smaller premium), than to the
more mainstream insurers. If the business has small or medium risk involved, the insurers will
usually have the standard rate applied to determine the cost of the premium. The insurer will use this
rate to apply a factor that is determined by level of activity taking place in that business. This
involves looking at the turnover in public and product liability insurance or the company s
employees liability insurance. However, there may be some other factors in the process of the
determination of the premium such as historical claims records and experience and risk management
procedures. If the business involves high risk, the price of the premium will probably be discussed
in a very scrupulous way putting every detail into
Grant Proposal Paper
Grant proposal A was about implementing an expansion to ABC s Alternative Breaks program to
send groups of students to various communities around the country. Overall, I felt this grant was well
written. This grant proposal is straight to the point, but gives enough information within most areas
where clarification in not necessary. This grant proposalfalls under the communityservice, and civic
engagementcategories. Although this grant proposal is for an expansion of preexisting program, I
can see why they want to expand the program. The program is helps bring awareness to social
problems, promotes physical activity, and helps entice people to engage in their communities. I feel
that this expansion program would benefit communities,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The grant proposal application states that the project must have an end date on or before August 31,
2014. However, this proposal says the project end date is ongoing, which violates the rules. There
was no indication how the project would impact those involved, or how it would impact the
community. This proposal never indicated how they would evaluate the project itself once it was
over, and the project had no prediction of the sustainability after the grant either. The only strengths
this grant proposal had was providing a budget match, and fitting within the community service, and
civic engagement categories. I felt this grant proposal was pointless, and I would not fund this
proposal at all.
Grant proposal C proposed for a community mural to be created in various alleys within the
downtown area. This proposal falls within the community service, service learning, and civic
engagement categories. This grant proposal did not clearly state why it is imperative this project
should be funded. Besides stating illegal activities like tagging would decrease, essentially there
were no problems that would be addressed by this proposal. However, the proposal did state
property values would increase, and beautiful pictures would be displayed for the community to see,
if this project was funded. The impact for the community could be beneficial, and this is conveying
through the writing. I feel the amount of
Political Climates In George Orwell s Animal Farm
Gas lighting. Re writing history. Manipulation of society and facts. One might think these were
being used to describe current political climates. However, these describe the methods and rhetoric
used by Squealer, the talking pig, in George Orwell s Animal Farm, in his quest for the pig s
complete control over the farm. Squealer, like a true politician, lies and takes advantage of the less
intelligent and informed animals on the farm to ensure he and the pigs have all the power.
Throughout Animal Farm by George Orwell, Squealer is often found rewriting the history of the
Animal Farm for ways that are more often that not corrupt. He often does so for Napoleon s gain,
control over the farm, and for the pig s personal freedoms. For example, in chapter eight of Animal
Farm, Orwell writes, They thought the Fifth Commandment was No Animal shall drink alcohol, but
there were two words that they had forgotten. Actually the commandment read: No animal shall
drink alcohol to excess (Orwell, 109). In pages previous, it was assumed that the pigs were drinking
copious amounts of alcohol. Which, was something that was not allowed in the Seven
Commandments. But, the pigs did so anyway, and the outcome was not good Napoleon was thought
to be dying. The commandment was then changed. Squealer is changing these commandments so
the pigs are able to do things that contradict the original commandments without question or outrage.
They are taking advantage of the animal s memories
Nursing Assistant Interview Paper
Abstract A health career is a career many want to pursue including myself. By being in this class I
have learned so much. The interview I had with a Certified Nursing Assistant was beneficial
because it cleared up many questions I had. She answered how to got there, how she is working
her way up, and even likes and dislikes. A CNA might not do a lot of the things Nurses do but it
is a great way to start. This way you can work and continue to expand your education in the health
field. Ever since I can remember I have always been passionate about helping other people, which
then sparked my desire to continue my education. As I began to grow older I witnessed my four

She highlighted a few bullets under each category that she felt played a huge role in her life and
career. For example, she said agreed that a health care worker should always do their job to the
best of their ability as well as be flexible. You will always be dealing with many people such as
patients, co workers, and even your boss. As an employee working in the health career, it is
important to avoid any type of gossip. As much as you don t get along with anyone it is best to
avoid talking about them and even your patient s health issues. By doing so you represent being a
trustworthy employee who respects and is a good role model to others. You will encounter many
new people coming in to work and it is your job to set an example. Although there will be days
when you are feeling angry or upset it is your job to put all personal issues to the side. When you
are at work you need to be ready and complete everything you are assigned to do. If you decide to
not follow rules you can easily be replaced. She mentioned that the health field is a growing field
and extremely competitive. That is why you should always do your best and being passionate
about what you do helps as well. I plan to go into nursing one day and all this advice was very
beneficial coming from a Certified Nurse Assistant who is around many people daily. In an
Moon Landing Hoax
Although Technology to fake the moon landing did not exist at the time, the U.S. Government was
desperate to beat the Russians in the space race, faked the lunar landings by having NASA. Stage
the whole thing. There has been a number of people who believe the moon landings never actually
happened, faked right before our eyes maybe by our own government and other organizations. Our
Government merely could have cheated public people out of billions of tax dollars just so they
could beat the soviet union in the space race. NASA could have easily tampered with the photos
tapes and other evidence just to make us believe that man has been to the moon. Conspirator s more
than likely believe by reason of this would not be the first time the gov has lied or hid something
from the people. Who is to say man did go to the moon who s to say we didn t there are many
arguments for and against the moon landing did NASA really have the technology to do this? The
Apollo 11mission on July 16, 1969 was to have humans land on the moon and to come back alive,
the Apollo 11 launch happened at the Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex and allegedly came
back on July 24th. This had come across to many people as one of the best accomplishments of
mankind where as others (skeptics) began wondering if the whole moon landing thing even ever
happened in the first place. As of now 20% of Americans believe the proclaimed moon landing was
just a 30 billion dollar swindle by NASA and the government.
